This Man Confessed
question
Confused with Confessions

**Contains Spoilers**
So I've just re-read the series for the 2nd time and it's one of my absolute favorites, however, something just struck me as odd and I wondered if anyone caught it too....
In the 2nd book, Jesse admits to Ava that he's never loved or cared for anything in his life before, but we find out at the end of book 3 that he had a daughter and his lies and confessions start to unravel. I know that he loved and cared for his daughter, so I'm confused why he tells Ava he's never loved anything before. I think that is so disrespectful to his deceased daughter, even if he was young and irresponsible when she died.
As I read the books over again, I noticed there were some inconsistencies with his lies and confessions and this one bothered me a bit. Anyone else notice it too?

I didn't notice it, however I must admit I only read the trilogy once. But I feel like Jesse was working so hard on keeping Ava out of his past. It might have been his way of pushing Ava away from it, because if he had told her that he had once cared for someone, we know Ava, she would have asked questions, and I feel like perhaps he simply wasn't ready to answer them and prefered to lie. He obviously loved his daughter dearly, so I don't think he did it in a disrespectful way, he was just protecting Ava. At least, in his weird and slightly wrong way, haha.
I hope I'm making sense.

I think that was a case of "retconning", which is short for retroactive continuity.
