amg Welcome to the third part of our re-read of The Witch's Daughter! On this thread, you can discuss the book up to Chapter 7. Please be considerate and don't jump ahead -- we don't want to spoil anything for the first-time readers among us!

To kick off the discussion, here are five questions for you to answer in the comments section below. Anyone who answers these questions will be eligible to win an early copy of The Return of the Witch! Winner will be chosen on Wednesday, 2/10. Good luck!

Discussion Questions:
1. Do you think Bess's mother did the right thing by saving Bess? Why do you think she chose to save Bess and not any of her other family members?
2. What do you think of the episode at the Three Feathers?
3. What are your thoughts on William's offer to Bess? What do you think of her mother's opinion about it?
4. Do you think the accusations against the "witches" are fair? Why or why not?
5. Were you surprised by the ending of Chapter 6?

Magiccats Love this book so far.
1. Yes, Bess's mother knew that Bess was the only one that had magic inside her as demonstrated in chapter 1 when Bess was making lace. She became angry and the candles all lit up. She heard her mother snap her fingers to put them out.
2. I thought it nice and rather surprising that Gideon would help her out by giving her the money for the cider and also demonstrating his magic.
3. I found it very disappointing when William offered her a job instead of his hand in marriage, however the class system was very strongly ingrained back then and her mother was right according to the times they lived in.
4. No, the accusations against the women were baseless . In fact anyone harboring ill will towards another for any reason could accuse the other of being a witch.
5. Yes, I was surprised that those creatures appeared at the house and that Kilpeck managed to show restraint at the very end of the chapter. I thought for sure he was going to kill Anne and Mary in the house.

1. I think Anne saved Bess because she saw herself in her and because this was the last of her family, the last of her children. She wasn't going to watch another loved one wither away and die. As a mother I can see how and why she stepped in and did all that she could to save Bess. And deep down I think she also knew that Bess would be the one to continue the family tradition of helping others. As Anne said, "the living need us."

2. I loved the fact that Bess stood up for herself when it came to the "groper." I would have done the same! I felt awful for Bess when it came to the cider. But of course Gideon would be there...That was an interesting meeting.

3. I felt it was a nice offer but I would have had the same reaction as Bess did. And I'm not surprised by her mother's reaction at all. Their life was in shambles and that offer would put them in a much better place than what they were currently in.

4. The accusations against the "witches" were absolute crap. The accusations were made out of anger and jealously, just as Anne said.

5. Of course I was surprised by the events at the end of chapter six. It was not at all what I was expecting. I mean, imps??? I was in disbelief when I read it *the first time* to be honest. But Bess finally saw the answers to her questions about what her mom had to "pay" to save her life. I was also surprised that Anne and Bess were still alive at the end of the chapter. Was it magic in Bess' stare that stopped Kilpeck from bringing the sword down upon her and her mom? Either way, I was glad to see that they both made it out of the chapter alive.
