The Road by Cormac McCarthy The Road (also on Oprah's Book Club)

1984 by George Orwell 1984 (an obvious choice)

This Perfect Day by Ira Levin This Perfect Day (a disturbing society)

Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson Snow Crash (well, I wouldn't call it utopia)
