Kme_17 | 177 comments Checking in : ) I am glad to be on team with you all. My name is Kim. I am from Alabama USA. I love to read pretty much every thing.

message 11: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Welcome, Kim! I'm in Virginia, just moved down here from Massachusetts about 3 months ago. Thanks for checking in. I'm looking forward to getting started. :) Do you already have some books planned for March? Or are you more of a mood reader?

message 12: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Hi team! If everyone could just check in on this thread, that would be great. :) I'll be pm-ing everyone today to let you know it's here, if I haven't heard from you yet.

Also, could you please list any books you already plan to read in this thread and any cards you think it fits? That will help us to get started. I have already made my list and will post it later today.

I will also list the cards we need to complete in March later, so that we can start checking them off, organizing, and planning reads for cards that aren't already filled by preplanned reads.

Glad to have you all on the team! :)

Kme_17 | 177 comments I am more of a mood reader . However, I do know I am going to read The Girls of Atomic City The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II by Denise Kiernan which work for the zero card

message 14: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Ok, here is the tally of what we will need for all 13 hands. In the parenthesis, I have added the qualifications for the card as such (number in title, letter for title, author, character, or location, # in series).

Quantity needed - card (qualifications)`
4 - 0 (0, Z, standalone)
7 - 1 (1, O, 1st)
6 - 2 (2, T, 2nd)
7 - 3 (3, H, 3rd)
6 - 4 (4, F, 4th)
6 - 5 (5, I, 5th)
8 - 6 (6, S, 6th)
6 - 7 (7, V, 7th)
6 - 8 (8, E, 8th)
6 - 9 (9, N, 9th)
7 - Skip (K or P, skip card)
6 - Draw 2 (same book, two cards)
8 - Reverse (read by other member)
3 - Wild (any requirement)
4 - Wild Draw 4 (any book)

We will need to read 8 books that other members of our group have already read. Since we only have 5 members, we should start looking at bookshelves soon and planning those reads.

Please note that there are many qualifications that cover each card, so each book could fit several different cards. Character names, author's name, book title, and locations count for the letters. We will probably do some moving around to make sure that the books are used to fill up the cards we need first.

The first few hands we should focus on are:

Hand 1:
Skip
6
1
skip
Draw 2
5
Wild Draw 4

Hand 2:
5
4
7
7
1
4
2

Hand 3:
4
Reverse
2
Skip
Wild Draw 4
7
3

Also, focusing on the more difficult cards (V title, other's shelf) might be a good plan.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts on how we should progress or what you plan to read.

message 15: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments My planned reads are:

The Forgotten Girls, which is 7th in a series, so would be good for card #7. Could also work for cards 4 or 6.

Forever Odd - cards 1, 2, 4, skip

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie - 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, skip

My Name Is Lucy Barton - 0, 5, 6, 8

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend - 0, 5, 6, skip

I'm hopeful I can read all of these. Has anyone else read any of these already? If so, please let me know and I'll add 'reverse' to the list of cards they fit.

This will also work for 1 (Oakridge setting), 2 (Tennessee setting), and skip (author Kiernan). We can add character names after you read it, as they're not listed.

message 20: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo Hi guys! I'm Jen. I'm new to this group, and I really just joined because I stumbled upon this challenge and I was looking for another group game to do. I'm really excited for this to start. I need to organize my books a little better before I will know what I will be reading when it starts, but I love the idea of doing the harder cards first.

message 21: by Kme_17 (new)

Kme_17 | 177 comments Hi Jen : ) welcome. yeah organizing is all ways the hard part.

message 22: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Hi Jen! Welcome. :) Once you now what you're reading, let us know and we'll start matching up books with cards.

Important information for books when decided how to assign it:
Title
Author's name
Setting
Character's names
If it's part of a series, # in series

Hoping Karen & Teddie check in soon too. :)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1016 comments Hi All - glad to be a Minion!

I'm more of a mood reader, but will read almost anything - my tbr should be able to accommodate whatever we need wrt cards. I'll shortly post a few books I know I want to read in March - from there I can find something to read that fits what we need :)

message 24: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Excellent! Thanks, Teddie. Welcome to the team!

message 25: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexia23) I am reading Slaughter House Five right now. I am about half way through. I am reading A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Grey next.

message 26: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexia23) Slaughter House Five can count for a number five card.

message 27: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexia23) A Thousand Pieces of You can count as a two card.

message 28: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Feb 16, 2016 11:43AM) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Hi Karen - Books don't count for this challenge unless they are started on March 1st or after. Right now, we are just in the planning stages of deciding which books we will read in March to fit the cards. Will you be starting A Thousand Pieces of You during the challenge?

Edit: Cards for this book: 1 (1st in series), 2 (T title), Skip (character Paul)

message 29: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexia23) Yes I will, as I'm currently reading two other books.

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Hi everyone! I copied this from the general UNO thread:

Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count.

The challenge starts on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this countdown.

Main cities, FYI:
Tokyo: 5pm, 1st March
London: 8am, 1st March
New York: 3am, 1st March
San Francisco: Midnight, 1st March

message 33: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo Woohoo! I'm excited for this.

Here are some of the books I will be reading around that time:
The 5th Wave
The Night Sister
I'll Give You the Sun
The Truth About Alice
The Silver Star

So, any of those are a possibility. Maybe we can compare with every else's plans and I can pick which to start with.

In a couple hours I will add info about my book options n

Kristie | 5943 comments Excellent! Thanks for doing that. :) It's really helpful when assigning cards.

message 36: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo My week started off a little slow. I didn't get enough sleep this weekend so every morning has been rough. Anyways, how is everyone else's week going?

message 37: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments I haven't had enough sleep this week either. I've been sooo sleepy, but I slept well last night and I'm back on track. I'm doing a reading challenge this week that is taking a lot my time and I'm looking forward to starting this challenge too.

message 38: by Jen (new)

Jen Sabo There is never enough sleep.

My game plan is to slow down on reading a little now and work on getting some school work done now. I have a couple a papers and small things I can get done. Then, when March rolls around I will have time to read a little more.

Maybe a couple days before everyone can pick their first book, and we can make sure we are covering different things.

message 39: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Good plan, Jen. :) I figured I would ask about first books a couple of days before, but feel free to post any time if you already know where you want to start.

message 40: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Mar 02, 2016 05:29PM) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments I am planning to start with:
Forever Odd - cards 1, 2, 4, skip
and
My Name Is Lucy Barton - 0, 5, 6, 8

Our starting hands are:

Hand 1:
Skip - Odd Thomas (Kristie)
6 - The Never Hero (Teddie)
1 - Odd Thomas (Draw 2) (Kristie)
Skip - A Thousand Pieces of You (Karen)
Draw 2 - No Book
5 - My Name is Lucy Barton (Kristie)
Wild Draw 4 -

Hand 2:
5 - Illumnae (Teddie)
4 - The First Wave (Jen)
7 - Burned (Jen)
7 - Never Go Back (Teddie)
1 - The Pioneer Woman (Kim) ✓
4 -
2 - 1356 (Karen)

Hand 3:
4 -
Reverse - The Passage (Teddie)
2 - Scarlet (Teddie)
Skip -
Wild Draw 4 -
7 -
3 -

I have added in my cards, but can move them just around as needed. Just figured I's start somewhere. If everyone wants to add a comment with their first planned books, I'll start adding those in too.

I plan to leave the wild draw 4 until the end of the month, since anything will fit there.

message 41: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Ok, Minions, just a couple of days left! Are you all ready to get started?! I know I am. I have a couple of books to finish up before the end of the month, then I'm looking forward to starting my new books on the first.

LET'S GO, MINIONS!!!

message 42: by Alexia (new)

Alexia (alexia23) I will be starting the book 1356 tomorrow as well as a Thousand Pieces of You.

message 43: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Minions! It's almost time... countdown

Remember to check in to tell me what you're planning to read. Also, let me know once you've completed a book so that I can add it to our spreadsheet. If you can give me a breakdown of cards that your book fits, as Jen did above, that is very helpful so I don't have to bug you for information.

I have my books on my nightstand waiting to start. Can't wait! Of course this challenge starts at 3am for me, so I won't be starting exactly on time!

message 44: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (last edited Feb 29, 2016 02:53PM) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Karen - Just linking your book, so I can add cards. Let me know if I missed any. The only character I know is Thomas, because he's the only one listed. I also don't know the setting. :) 1356 - card 2 (character Thomas)

I will have to ask Karen how to rank that in a series. It may be a standalone??

message 45: by Teddie (last edited Mar 01, 2016 02:58PM) (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1016 comments I can take H1 6 and H2 2 with these (both work for both): The Never Hero - location Seattle, character Jonathan Tibbs, and Scarlet - begins with an S and second book in series. I'm on hold at the Lib but should be getting it soon.

I can also take H2 5 or 1: Illumnae - I or first book in the series.

I'd also like to reread The Passage (want to read The Twelve and have forgotten half of what happened in the first book) so depending where we are on hands, that can work for SKIP, 1, 9, 3,4,5 or Reverse, if anyone else has read it?

message 46: by Teddie (new)

Teddie (teddieg) | 1016 comments Oh, and I can do a H2 7 with: Never Go Back - location Virginia

message 47: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5943 comments Thanks, Teddie. I'll update our list. I have read The Passage, so we can use it as a reverse. I've also read The Twelve. :)

Share your passion for books

To get to know each other and share our passion for books we'd like you to share a book memory, write a couple of lines, what it meant to you, did a book change your life? Why do you always re-read the same book, which is you best book and why. What you share can be anything and everything. You are what you read and we want to get to know you.

Post your memory here: Share a book memory

Jen Sabo Hi guys!! I had an exam and a big project due yesterday so I've been really busy.
I started to read Burned by Ellen Hopkins.
It's 1st in a series. The authors last name is H and main character is S. So it can cover one of those.

After this one, in going to read The Fifth Wave
