MONDAY
Pro - Ch.5

Below are some notes and discussion topics, but please feel free to start your own in the comments, as well as post your highlights.

Prologue:
- Ky is interrogated about the attempted murder, and a deal is mentioned to avoid going to trial
What’s your first thoughts about Ky? Did you think he was good, bad, in the wrong place at the wrong time or just looking for a fight?

Chapter 1:
- We meet a young Jackson and Ky and begin to see their past and the bond they shared.
- Jackson tells Ky about the deal.
Knowing that Ky and Jackson know each other did you expect their bond?
Do you think Jackson is manipulating Ky to get his way by using Steve’s memory?

Chapter 2:
- Past shows Jackson’s family taking Ky in and standing up to his Dad for him.
- Ky goes to a fight and meets Nate and Tiny.
Seeing how Jackson and Ky’s relationship developed, do you now feel different about Ky helping him?
How did you feel seeing the first scene with Ky and Nate DeLuca?

Chapter 3:
- Nate questions Ky’s motives for wanting to fight.
- Ky and Madison meet for the first time.
What are your thoughts on Nate and Tiny?
This is our first time meeting Madison. Thoughts? Who do you think Sara is? Sister? friend? Mom? Lover?

Chapter 4:
- Ky attends his first mandatory anger management session, and we meet Doctor Cinnamon Aroma.
- Madison and Ky have an impromptu dinner together.
- Reflection shows Jeff dying and Ashlee cheating.
I loved writing Ky's therapy sessions, which, by the way, were a last minute add on. I loved her methods of getting him to talk. What do you think of them and how do you think this will play into the bigger picture?
Madison made me so suspicious, the texts, her nerves… do you think she is just a shy girl afraid of making the wrong move or more?
How do you think these past events changed Ky?

Chapter 5:
- Ky meets Nate again and tries to do some recon at the venue.
- Jackson checks in regarding the recon work Ky has done.
What is coming in the mail? What do you think Madison’s obsession with it is?
What are your thoughts on Nate?
Do you feel like Madison is different from other girls her age?

Beverly | 107 comments I don't know why or if anyone else felt this way, but for some reason I was more leery for Jackson at first.

message 11: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 107 comments Madison was so odd to me and such a contradiction to me, but I did really like her.

message 12: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbieflowers) | 15 comments I love the flashbacks of how Ky and Jackson's relationship developed. It really explains a lot about why Ky is the way that he is. He was the defender even as a kid.

I feel like there's a lot more going on with Nate than what we initially see. He doesn't give off that drug dealer vibe. He seems more like a really smart businessman.

Debbie (debbieflowers) | 15 comments Beverly wrote: "I don't know why or if anyone else felt this way, but for some reason I was more leery for Jackson at first."

I wasn't leery of Jackson, I just thought he was trying to do his job. If he would've let Ky go would it have helped anything? Instead he gave Ky a purpose and got him into therapy. I think Jackson is a lot smarter than we give him credit for.

message 14: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (booksandpizza31) | 39 comments Jackson I think just has a lot of stuff going on.

Christine is probably my most favorite parent ever. Like what a badass!

I dont think there is manipulation. I think they both just want justice.

Their first scene together was interesting. Ky was definitely a little nervous but stayed strong. That Nate....ready to see more of him in later chapters.

Sara seems very worried. And seems to be the guidance Madison needs.

There is more to Madison. After looking back I have some hi-lights that have me curious!

message 15: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (booksandpizza31) | 39 comments And there is a part where she talks about junk punching him if needed because she was told that she could.

Whaaaat?!? Guys in general? Ky specifically? If so why him specifically?

message 16: by Cassie (new)

Cassie (booksandpizza31) | 39 comments Also a bit further in she talks about being told to dress up and flirt to attract his attention.

Is this innocent? Is there motive? Who is telling her this? Sara?

Jackson just gave me anxiety. LOL I was so worried about Ky going into that world. Once I saw how their relationship progressed and read the flashbacks I was more trusting.

That's why I am like who is Sara?? I have my theory, but I am probably wrong. LOL

Beverly | 107 comments Madison is so different and I just want to know more about her, I want to understand why she is the way she is.

message 20: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 107 comments I think her obsession with the mail has to be more than she is letting on. I jus wonder what she is waiting for.

I would like to see even more Jackson, hint hint!

message 23: by Karine (new)

Karine Bilodeau | 2 comments So I'm actually reading chapters with the group read. It's my first time reading it and I thought it would be fun to follow real time, although I must admit it's hard to stop ;)

In the first chapter I felt that Ky had some major issues but was still a good guy,as for Jackson I felt he was trying to help him out but still didn't really trust him till the flashbacks.
to
Cinnamon Aroma? I hope we find out later that she worked her way through college as a stripper and never even had to give herself a stage name :OP

Nate & Tiny= Bad news

My questions right now
1. Why aren't Ky & Jackson close anymore?
2. Who is Madison and where does she come from?
3.Will I be able to hold out and not go ahead of the group read?

message 24: by Christy (new)

Christy (christyb23) | 48 comments I still want to know who Sara is. I remember my first read of Combative my main questions had to do with Sara and the mailbox!!!

I am getting ready to start my re-read and I'm anxious to see what I see differently this time around!

message 25: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 107 comments Karine, I will be so impressed if you can hold out! I agree with you. I was wondering why they didn't talk anymore.

I want to know more about Madison and like Christy said, what's the deal with the mailbox??

message 26: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 107 comments Christy, I am so excited you are rereading this! I noticed more things and have theories!

Tuesday
Chapter 6 - 10.

Chapter 6:
- Ky and Madison go out on a date, it’s Madison’s first date ever.
- She is unsure of what to do, obviously very inexperienced.
Why do you think Madison has never dated?

Chapter 7:
- Madison gets drunk and hits on Ky, he turns her down because she is drunk.
Madison is such a contradiction, drinks whiskey like a pro, but unsure during dates. Why do you think that is?

Chapter 8:
- Ky begins training, Madison is ignoring him now after being shut down.
Do you think Madison had someone else in her apartment?

Chapter 9:
- Nate calls a meeting with Ky, he suspects that Ky is a cop. During the meeting, Nate gets to Ky and Ky shows him his fear.
- Ky takes Madison to flower shop to order flowers to have delivered to his "mom."
This is the first time we learn Ky is sending his mom flowers. What do you think that says the kind of person he is?

Chapter 10:
- Madison calls Ky out and asks why he doesn’t hand deliver the flowers.
- Madison asks to meet Jackson.
- Nate sees Jackson, Madison and Ky at a bar. After Jackson leaves, he joins them and shows an interest in Madison.
Do you think Nate’s interest in Madison was just to rattle Ky?

message 28: by Beverly (last edited Feb 23, 2016 07:53AM) (new)

Beverly | 107 comments I seriously don't even judge Ky for being intimidated by Nate. He terrifies me!!

I am not sure what Nate's interest in Madison is, but I do think it could be either.

message 29: by Debbie (new)

Debbie (debbieflowers) | 15 comments Nate is a wildcard. He doesn't look or act like your stereotypical drug dealer. He uses that fact to his advantage.

Ky is a natural born protector. He did it with Jackson when they were kids and he's doing it with Madison now. I think he saw her has this sheltered little thing and that's why he was so drawn to her. That protective instinct took over. That was amplified when Nate took interest in her at the bar.

There are so many layers to every character in this book that it's hard to know exactly what they're all thinking.

message 30: by Christy (new)

Christy (christyb23) | 48 comments This second time reading, I feel like I'm making more connections and 'seeing' more I didn't see the first time around.

There is obviously a reason that Madison's first date is when she is 22. I think she was sheltered as a kid/teen. That was my first instinct when reading.

I think it says a lot about Ky's character that he sends his mom flowers every month anonymously.

I loved the meeting between Jackson/Ky/Madison and Madison/Ky/Nate.
I think Jackson is funny and I love the connection he has with Ky. Nate is just something else... it's so hard to tell if he's good or bad, or what he's up to.

Agreed Chris, it made me like Ky even more.

Wednesday - Chapter 11-15
Chapter 11:
- Madison allows herself to be vulnerable with Ky and breaks down in front of him about feeling off.
- We learn Madison is on medication.
- Ky gives Madison a rainbow rose .
Seeing Madison being vulnerable, does it allow you to connect with her more?
Chapter 12:
- Madison and Ky go to the Dollar Store and she opens up more regarding her desire for love.
- Madison and Ky hook up, but no sex, Madison wants to wait.
Why do you think Madison’s time is ticking away?
Chapter 13:
- Madison and Ky are getting closer and having sleepovers, still no sex.
- Jackson is getting desperate and pushing Ky to be bolder in getting information.
- Nate catches Ky touching his phone and hits him.
What are your thoughts on Nate right now?
Chapter 14:
- Ky surprises Madison with “mail."
- Madison takes care of Ky’s injuries.
- Flashback to Steve's death.
Steve was obviously damaged, but seeing how he cared for Ky, in the only way he knew how, does it make you want to find the guys responsible even more?
Chapter 15:
- Madison feels insecure about Ky’s feelings for her.
- Ky is hurt during training and is out of commission so Jackson comes over to his apartment.
- Ky opens up more about his past, but Madison refuses to tell him anything about herself.
Do you think Jackson is just being overprotective or do you doubt Madison’s motives, too?

message 33: by Karine (new)

Karine Bilodeau | 2 comments Something is definitely up with Madison and Nate, there is some kind of connection there...

I think Madison is hiding many things and the feeling I get is that she's been living under a rock for a few years but why? Was she held captive? I read too many dark romances and that's the first thing that comes to mind.

I'm also wondering if Nate is really bad...Sometimes things are not what they appear.I doubt he's completely good but maybe there's more to him.

I think Ky needs to walk away from the whole deal, nothing good ever comes from revenge.

I think Nate has the ability to be very dangerous it just depends on how far he is provoked or feds he needs to go. That's what makes me nervous for Ky.
