Brantford Public Library's Online Book Club discussion

I thought that the video that is posted for this book is really interesting. I wonder if this story fueled the creative process for the author - does anyone know this to be true?

I actually saw her discuss this in another video. She heard about the Eugenics program when she moved to North Carolina and apparently she was once a social worker herself so it really caught her attention. In 2011 when those public hearings happenend it was big news in NC. That's when she decided to write the book.

It just makes me think that if this happened in one state it must have happened in others and indeed in other countries making me wonder just how wide spread this practice was and is it still happening?
