I read it very early in Hindi but missed the point entirely which was political. My memories were of some pleasant stories of Gandhi as a child calling his mother to look at the elusive moon to break her fast and such.
I am able to see what Gandhi was with my second reading of it. His resistance of the things around him which force him to change his ways for nothing in exchange he rejects in England. He discovers the joys of a simple and frugal life. He cooks simple meals and walks to his job in London to save expenses. Finally he saw that the grandeur of the life around him will take away what he had from him. He finally saw how painfully and dutifully his elder brother musters money and sends it to finance his studies in England. His way of life is readily dropped by most as it is not easy, even in India.
He is building into a revolutionary who will finally end the British Raj in India. To see how takes away my breath. Stay tuned.
