I need an idea for a short story or poem to submit to a writing group that is putting together a collection of short stories and poems. The word count max is 2000 so nothing to complex please. I am open to any idea but it needs to be appropriate for school.

wealthy woman falls in love while volunteering at a soup kitchen with a homeless vet who has PTSD but womans parents who are against violence guns war and so on would never approve so she struggles to help him while hiding her relationship/friendship with him. Maybe she was at the soup kitchen because it was community service because shes a self involved college girl who got in trouble and as she gets to know him she developes into a caring woman and he shapes her future more than college or her parents ever could. But shortly after things start looking bright he has an episode and takes his own life. Maybe it could be like a journal shes keeping and you can show her personal growth by the things she says and thinks about the world around her.

Or maybe
A man is stumbling home from a party drunk and sees a car run off a bridge into the river but before the cars back tires make it off the bridge the driver throws something out the window and the drunk man picks it up and staggers home, passes out and forgets he has it but its something important and the man basically becomes a type of detective to figure out what it was he actually saw (he cant remember because of the booze) sees the car being pulled from river on the news calls the cops to report what he saw ...

What have you considered so far? What if you wrote a story about friends who met on a writing group board (like this one). They be come close enough that they have actually exchanged numbers and met once while one was on vacation to the island the other lives on (they become best of friends). After a few weeks of not connecting she is convinced something is wrong and heads back down to the island to look for her and becomes submerged into a dark world she had no idea her friend was involved in... maybe she finds her dead or in an island cave chained to a wall and has to rescue her. Or if shes deceased she becomes involved in the case and falls for the detective.

My school is putting together a collection of stories for a writing magazine of sorts.

I like the idea but it would come out too long. I may end up doing the fanfic idea i came up with in music history. the bat brothers as music eras.

If you look online there are many stories where people have died for 44/45 minutes many either dont remember or went to heaven/hell and they come back. My own father died in December for 44 minutes the doctor said he call it the chosing time. They either chose to stay or go at that time mark. Maybe you could make up a reason they have 45 minutes to decide. Physics says energy never dies it get transferred into something else we are bodies of energy so we must go somewhere in those minites of being dead. Maybe your character comes back with knowledge of their past lives and struggles to except the horror she caused in a previous life.

Maybe, that could work.
