12 year-old Clarence struggles against black ghetto life while caring for his violent, drug addicted, prostitute mother, and his infant sister, while trying to stay out of gangs (unsuccessfully). He is eventually "rescued" by a Jewish couple, themselves suffering from the alienation of their children. They see Clarence scrounging for food and a friendship develops that ultimately has them guiding Clarence through new challenges of white prejudice and bigotry....
