Book One of The Miyran Heir series:
The mark means honor. The mark invites death.
On a distant planet, Eros thrives in the Human settlement he calls home. Raised to follow his grandfather's noble footsteps, he studies the details of each species that co-exist here. But when the mark appears, he's called to fight, which changes his life forever.
Forced to abandon his home, the mark makes him the hunted. He's attacked the night he arrives in the city. A tough, street fighter named Kenrya saves his life. When they join others on the same journey, her cynical attitude drives a wedge between the group.
Given the perils facing them, can they put aside their differences and trust each other long enough to survive?
Discover this epic adventure where an individual's unique abilities can change the course of the future.

Thoroughly enjoyed 'The Journey of the Marked'. I discovered it when we were both finalists in The Wishing Shelf Award and that cover kept calling me to read the book. All the characters were interesting but I liked Kenrya best - she reminded me of some of the 'tough' adolesecnts I used to work with when I was a teacher.

I'm glad she's a favorite of yours.
Wordwizard wrote: "Why so many sentient species? Unlikely, eh?"On our world -- yes.
In a fictional story, on a fictional planet, in a fictional part of the galaxy -- not so much.
The story doesn't focus on the plausibility of the setting, but rather on the lives of the characters. Therefore the number of sentient species isn't important.

Hi Rebecca! You are so humorous! I love your opening sentence for your booth, very clever. I like how unique your novel sounds as well! Where did you get the idea for such a clever story?

Hi Ashley. Thanks for stopping by. I debated adding a virtual metal detector for entry, but that seemed a bit overdone. ;-)
The story developed from the genres / styles I love myself. Throw in a desire to also deliver a message, something of a knack for developing interesting characters, and my quirky sense of humor and the novel was born (not to mention the story arc for the series).
Particularly in the YA space, there aren't many books similar to mine.
Your book looks really awesome, Rebecca! I love a good mix of scifi and fantasy. I particularly love what you wrote on your blog about it: Valuing differences. This is the fundamental message behind my novel, The Journey of the Marked. Regardless of ability or appearance, everyone can contribute, everyone can make a difference. While I wanted to highlight the advantages of differences, I also wanted to write something entertaining that I loved
That's a theme I'm trying to incorporate into my current work in progress, where half the world's population are gifted with magic, and the other half are not.
Hi Traci and thank you!Valuing differences is the fundamental concept that underpins the whole series. That's actually part of the reason I included a variety of species. There are so many stories about bullying these days and I think people forget where extreme cases of such persecution can lead.
It sounds like the magically gifted in your story are the alphas? Or the stronger?
The magic wielders in my work in progress are generally stronger, yes. Though in some nations, others have regulated their populations and managed to enslave them. I'm in the throes of the second draft and it feels like it's taking forever.

Maddy wrote: "Krystic is my favorite species because they seem so interesting and beautiful"Thanks, Maddy. The Krystics have some interesting traits that readers will see develop. But, I do love the idea of the golden design on the forehead.
Just popping in to say "HI"...And to say The Journey of the Marked is an awesome book! I loved all the different character traits and 'skills' of the many different species.

Thank you, Rainne. So nice of you to stop by and say hello. I hope you're enjoying the convention.

Gaela. One, it's name is one letter off from mine. Two, they sound fascinating!
Hi Kaela and thanks for stopping by. Interesting that your name is close to Gaela. I would love to be able to fly, so definitely a species that intrigues me.

That's the first thing I noticed was the similarities in the name. Really grabbed my attention. Plus, like you said, there's the whole flying thing. :)

My series is a hybrid between gritty sci-fi and fantasy. Most of the species and world are grounded in sci-fi norms, but there are some distinct fantasy elements and the "feel" of the story leans toward the fantasy side.
I'll be posting a giveaway or two as part of the event, as well as introducing book two in my series, which will be released later this year. So be to sure to check back in.
