Is it more likely they treated him like crap first, so he decided to treat them like crap and attack first in order to protect his feelings?

Or is it more likely he "assumed" they'd treat him like crap, so he decided to treat them like crap first, in order to protect his feelings?

I love the Roman general. Trust me. But when Valerius first met Talon there was hope of a friendship. Here is the quote in Night Embrace to prove it:

"Valerius had taken one look at Talon's jacket and tore, and sneered the word Celt, thus letting Talon know friendship with this Dark-Hunter was about as likely as finding a parking space for a tank on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras."

Talon even said he knew that friendship with the dark hunter would be unlikely pretty much. Which meant that Talon had hope of making friends with the dark hunter, but then saw it as pointless.

What I don't understand is even if lots of people hate him, why didn't Valerius give Talon a chance, or anyone whose only just met him a chance?

Not even Seize the Night was able to justify that. Was Valerius worried that Talon might end up hating him later on, and just decided to attack right away?

Misty | 83 comments I honestly don't remember, it's been a while since I read Seize the Night.
But the notion of "strike first, ask later" looks like common for Dark-Hunters because they are a bunch of people who was betrayed. They don't trust anybody as a rule.
