Hi! I just started the group today. Thanks for joining.

message 3: by Jeanette (new)

Jeanette (jeanettes) I'm Jeanette and live in the UK. I turned my spare bedroom into a library room where I have more books than I could read in a life time, but I still find myself taking books out from our local library.

message 4: by Terris (new)

Terris Hi, I'm Terri. I live in Illinois, USA. I love to read a lot of different genres. I recently retired & since I have more reading time, I turned my little office into a reading room, kind of like you, Jeanette :)
However, I don't usually buy books, unless I pick them up at a library sale. I almost always get mine through my local library. Since I can order books through interlibrary loan, OverDrive, & 3M Cloud library, I can usually get whatever I want. I have been to my library twice today!!

message 5: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 1580 comments Hello, Tessa (or BC) here. I was a member of this group on Shelfari and am happy it had surfaced here on Goodreads.

I was born and raised in Texas, but have lived in Wisconsin since I came to Marquette University and fell in love with winter. (I really hate hot weather.) Married, no kids, no pets. I work in healthcare administration for a group of pediatric surgeons. I also do volunteer work in the arts: on the board at Skylight Music Theatre, and the North Shore Public Library, and serve on the Lakefront Festival of Arts organizing committee.

In addition to reading, I also enjoy theater (especially musical theater), gardening, cooking and travel.

message 6: by Beachesnbooks (new)

Beachesnbooks Hi Shelfari friends and fellow library lovers! I'm Jaleenajo here and *sniff* on Shelfari. I'm from upstate New York and am an obsessive book nerd. I especially love anything creative and weird--which a lot of the time can mean scifi/fantasy--but I like to skip around with genres.

Glad to see this group coming back together!

message 7: by Terris (new)

Terris Hey, Jj, nice to see you here ;)

message 8: by Brina (new)

Brina I'm Brina. I'm from Illinois, live in Ohio. I've been going to the same library for the past8 years. I only get books from the library, the branch staff all know me, and if they don't have a book, they order it for me. Excited to meet other library aficionados.

message 9: by Terris (new)

Terris Hello Brina! Glad you could join us! :)

message 12: by Lee (new)

Lee | 6 comments Hi I'm Lee and although I have a large quantity of bought books I still have yet to read I still check books out of various local libraries.
I'm approaching fifty and one of the biggest disappointments in my life is that I will never live long enough to read all the books I want to.
If i could only win the lottery I could lead a life of leisure with more reading time,I can but dream!

message 13: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 748 comments With any luck, Lee, what we saw in What Dreams May Come is true and there is a Celestial Library with every book in it. My fingers are crossed, for sure.

message 14: by Lee (new)

Lee | 6 comments Oh that is MY idea of heaven!!!

message 15: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 748 comments I also like the idea of the Akashic Record, in which every single thing that ever happened is recorded for posterity. You could definitely get to the bottom of things by just looking it all up in there.

It looks like Shelfari is done, I just went there and there is a page telling me that Shelfari and Goodreads are merging yada yada yada, completion date May 31, 2016, BUT, no way to access groups or shelves or anything like that.

I had three books out, and two were due and when I tried to renew them I couldn't. So I decided I would just finish them up quick and then return them a day or two late.

WELLLLLLL, I finished one of them yesterday, it's overdue, another one was overdue, I went online to renew the third one, I always check, 'renew all books'. And they all renewed. Even the ones I couldn't renew before. WUT!?

OK, then, carry on.

Oh yes, a mystery..... I think it renewed online and just did not show up until later.
I just pay the fine and keep the book if I an not done and have just a little to go. The fine goes to buying more books for the library so it is a win, win as I look at it.

If you click on your name on the top right ("signed in as BOOK CONCIERGE" for example) ... it will take you to your profile. From there you can access your shelf and your groups. The Search function is gone, however, you can get around it by picking a tag you think the book is likely to have ... or checking a friend's shelf you think might have that book ... and going from there. Awkward and messy but a way to get around the site.

I never mind that much paying fines for that reason :)
Also shopping at library used book sales...I am buying way too many books, but it's for a good cause! Lol

You found tags? Mine are clean missing.

message 25: by Brina (new)

Brina If it makes you all feel any better last year I paid a $25 fine so my husband could finish one book, Boys in the Boat. He enjoyed it so I looked the other way ;)

message 26: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 1580 comments Fishface wrote: "You found tags? Mine are clean missing. ..."

Go to your profile page ... click on the first book shown.
When the page for that book opens, click on ANY of the tags shown for that book.

When you are on that page ... click the "multiple tags" link
When that little box opens, type any tag you want in there ... don't have to use the original tag at all.

For example, I opened Dance Hall of the Dead ... clicked on "american lit" tag. Then when I went to filter I typed in "banned books" .... then I searched for PEYTON and found PEYTON PLACE (which is the book I'm about to finish now)

message 29: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 748 comments Book Concierge, I don't think you understand what I'm saying. When I transferred my books over here from Shelfari, there were no tags for me to click on. I had to add them all by hand. I'm saying that someone else seems to have been able to transfer them here, tags and all, and I don't see how they did it.

So you had no tags on Shelfari?

The instructions I'm giving are how to get to a book on Shelfari ... not on goodreads. Sorry for the confusion.

I can't believe I've only read 11 books so far this year. On the other hand I've gotten a lot of knitting done.

message 34: by Andrea (new)

Andrea (dreakay) | 1 comments Hello to everyone in this group! My name is Andrea and I live in Canada and have always loved libraries. I actually work in a library and so have a hard time justifying buying books. I mostly borrow from my library or read ARCs through netgalley.
It's nice to be among fellow library lovers.

Well, that's one way you could handle it, Bell -- or you could just read more books!!!

I have some good news, my niece and nephew both found jobs! My niece got a job with the county in the agency that goes after dead-beat dads (yay S) and he got a job at Cosco putting on tires (hey he's making money).

So proud of my babies!

Captain Obvious looks like someone I know so I always get a kick out of seeing his commercials.

Fishface | 748 comments According to my trusty appointment book, as of tomorrow I am only 32 weeks away from being "vested." Starting April 9th, if I am savaged by goats or t-boned by a drunk driver while working and just can't do it any longer, I can get retirement benefits.

I just noticed on my front page that because I am reading Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, the site recommended a book on Vietnam! Huh???
