Cinder: General Discussion *Spoiler Free*
I loved this book! The entire series was fantastic and riveting. I find it amusing that your name is Winter. =-D Also, I missed the nomination thread; I was wondering how this tied into Spring Cleaning...

Hello, I nominated Cinder. As Rene said, I thought it fit the theme of spring cleaning because it's based on Cinderella. More selfishly, I decided to nominate Cinder because I'd heard good things about it and it has been on my wishlist for ages. Can't wait to start reading!
Cinder is really fun! I read it right after reading the original Cinderella story. I'm excited to hear what you all think about it.
I've recommended this book to quite a few people--excited to see it got picked! Looking forward to following the discussion.
I'm super excited about the discussion! I zipped through Cinder in just a couple of days and immediately obtained the next two books. (I had to wait in complete agony for two weeks for the fourth...how did people wait a full year?!) I definitely let this one sit on my to-read shelf waayy too long. I'm glad this is giving others the opportunity to find an excuse to make time to read it.
René wrote: "I'll be honest, I'm excited for April but I'm a bit iffy on Cinder. I'm really hoping I'll like it but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about the sci-fi genre as of yet."I was the same way. That's why it sat on my shelf for so long. I kept thinking, "I LOVE fairytale retellings, but....cyborg Cinderella with aliens?....I just don't know how I feel about that..." It blew my mind. I'm a pretty big sci-fi chick, and a moderate paranormal person, but I never would have thought to mix all three of these genres, for sure! Meyer combines them seamlessly, and I do mean seamlessly. She stays true to the fairytale elements we all love, but adds the totally awesome sci-fi feel in such a way that truly compliments the fairy tale. Her world-building is phenomenal. I don't know if you'll like it as much as I did, but I do know I certainly didn't expect to like it as much as I did.
Coralie wrote: "I loved this book! The entire series was fantastic and riveting. My real name: Disa doesn't sound at all good in English so I prefer Winter ^^
And so you should be! I read this just over a year ago, and while it's slightly flawed (possibly), it's definitely worth it. Even if I feel an odd little bit of distance towards the series (maybe because it's over :|) which I'm aiming to rectify with the short story collection next month, I'm still hoping people enjoy it and looking forward to seeing what they think :) Truth be told I'm tempted now to go back and read the whole thing this year, but I'm stronger than that. It's not going to happen! ... Probably. ;)

Yes, you're right, I've definitely got lots of other things to read, of course! Thank you for reminding me about all that Winter :P :)(I'll admit I *was* thinking that maybe I could just read the first book and leave it at that, but let's face it, I'm not sure I could have kept myself from reading on once I'd done that :D)
This has been sitting on my Kindle for a while know. This looks like a good reason to finally get around to reading it. :)

Right?! I needed the next book like air and water when I read it the first time. Maybe re-reading it would be different? Somehow I highly doubt it.

I figured Winter was an alias, but it's still cool! And definitely fitting for this series!
This group read will be my motivation to read Cinder. I've been planning to read it for over 2 years and I always put it off. This time I'll read it for sure.
Geri wrote: "This group read will be my motivation to read Cinder. I've been planning to read it for over 2 years and I always put it off. I even took the book to work with me. I mean this literally when I say I couldn't put it down lol! You'll love it! I loved it so much I couldn't wait for Scarlet to be available at my local library that I decided to buy the book.

You two read my mind! I've been pretty new to Goodreads. So when Goodreads sent me an email with new releases and had 'Winter' in the list, I looked into book #1. I just loved the idea of a retelling. Luckily for me my library had a copy available. I was weary about the sci-fi aspects of the story as well.
My all time favorite fairy-tale is Cinderella, so I just had to give it a try. I regret nothing! I read it so quickly it took me about 6 days to read (and I'm usually a 20-30 day type of reader). I took it to work, to bed, where ever I went I was reading this book.
It's also reassuring to know that Marissa Meyer is a fangirl of many things, including an avid fan of Rowling. I haven't read a book so quickly since Harry Potter. I was truly over joyed that I loved not only the book, but I love Meyer as an author. I love it more than I thought I would too. I told everyone I saw in person about it! Granted I probably sounded crazy but that's ok. This book was worth it :)
It's interesting to read what those who have already read Cinder think. I am so glad we've got the chance to read it. Bring on, April!

She's better and we're very happy ^^

I hope I get as hooked on it!

I was obsessed with 'Cinder' so I can't wait to see how everyone reacts.
Marissa Meyer is a frequently updated author on her Goodreads page. Wouldn't it be cool if she knew? :)
I loved this series and I was one of those who had to wait for each book to come out! :) Enjoy everyone and I'll look forward to seeing your comments.

XD Didn't dare take it past the locker room, but my classmates practically had to pry it out of my hands and drag me to class! I think I read each book in like 4 days-ish. Winter took about a week, but reading while in college is not exactly easy...

Me too! I'm so excited! It's almost like reading it for the first time again! Fresh meat!!!
I have to admit I had some reservations, but I started Cinder this afternoon and haven't been able to put it down. I'm really enjoying it.

I have a little devil on my shoulder telling me to tempt you into rereading the book just because but the little angel on the other shoulder is telling me not to. Decisions, decisions. :D
My copy came in to the library today so hey, at least I can say something good happened this crummy week. Cinder has been sitting somewhere on the bottom of my "I'll get to it eventually" list for quite some time.
It's labeled steampunk so that's a point in its favor right off the bat.
Bobbi wrote: "Paul wrote: "Yes, you're right, I've definitely got lots of other things to read, of course! Thank you for reminding me about all that Winter :P :)(I'll admit I *was* thinking that maybe I could ..."
I'd listen to the angel if I were you Bobbi; then again I've decided to (finally) read Vicious next month so maybe that'll get the devil to reconsider for itself. ;D
I'm not sure I'd say Cinder is steampunk myself, but it's reasonably close, probably so close as to make it not matter what I think. Then again, it never did matter what I thought, did it? ;)
Also, [not for Cinder, just for discretion] (view spoiler)
I am so stoked to see how everyone reacts to this book! I really enjoyed this series when I read it last summer. I would say the first book is probably the weakest one, but it is still really good. I think I gave it 3 stars, but it was a strong 3 stars. Have fun reading everyone! It's going to be awesome!
Jewel wrote: "I have all 6 Lunar chronicles books so this will be my motivaion to finish them all in April!"There are also several stories on the author's website that pertain to the series.
Paul wrote: "Bobbi wrote: "Paul wrote: "Yes, you're right, I've definitely got lots of other things to read, of course! Thank you for reminding me about all that Winter :P :)(I'll admit I *was* thinking that ..."
Again, not a spoiler about the book but (view spoiler)
Eeeh, unless they say it's steampunk because of Cinder's character. It being set in the future though, I guess it begs the question on whether there still have to be elements from the Victorian age. :/
Yay for Vicious! I hope you enjoy it. My boyfriend hasn't finished yet, but he's taking it with him when he deploys if he isn't finished by then.

Please explain to me the 'rules': you read the book and add comments in this discussion, spoilers and all?
I'm sorry...I'm a little confused...six books? I was under the impression that there were four in the series and a fifth companion novel, a compilation of the novellas.
No, six is right, there are definitely six. - Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest (the prequel), Winter, and Stars Above the new short story collection. I don't think Fairest is a part of Stars Above, at least.
I didn't realize Fairest was a book, I thought it was one of the short stories. Stars Above is the compilation of novellas.
CorrieGM wrote: "Please explain to me the 'rules': you read the book and add comments in this discussion, spoilers and all?"Hi CorrieGM, this thread is for general discussion of Cinder and I think there should be no spoilers here (mods, please correct me if I'm wrong). If you want to add spoilers, you can put them in the discussion threads for the relevant chapters and mark them as spoilers. Some examples how you can do this:
1. Write something like "please don't read this comment until you have read Chapter 5"
2. Or: "SPOILER AHEAD FOR CHAPTER 22 ************************************************"
3. Goodreads allows some html in comments. And there is a html way you can hide spoilers by using < spoiller >at the start and < / spoiller > at the end of your comment. Please note: I have deliberately spelt spoiler wrong and added spaces between the <> so you can see what you have to type
Hope this helps and makes sense :)
Thanks for commenting, Rachael! I do want to clarify one thing:As Rachael said, we have this topic for general discussion of the book, and as the title indicates there should be no spoilers here.
We also have four topics for discussing portions of the books. The first is for chapters 1-10. Not everyone who posts there will mark spoilers, however, so you shouldn't read that topic until after you've finished chapter 10 if you want to avoid spoilers.
This is different than buddy reads where all spoilers should be marked (since there's only one discussion topic per book).
Thanks Cassandra for clarifying. This is my first group read I'm participating in and even though I knew the basics,I thought it was better to check
No problem! Sometimes it takes us a little while to see a post with a question, so I always welcome folks trying to help out. :)
