I'm Australian, and I've read a bunch of Australian books. I'd recommend any books by Tim Winton, Craig Silvey, Markus Zusak or Kate Grenville as in Australia these authors are the ones we typically see as the modern Australian writers, who write books about Australia.

And Tim Winton's novel Cloudstreet has been voted in Australia as "The Great Australian Novel"

so those would be my recommendations for Australia

Peter - Kate Walker. Particularly if you're wanting something very quick.

Graeme Simsion is good for a quick light read.

Ashlee Nicole Bye is great for fans of young adult fantasy.
