Are you ready to start this one?

I have read through chapter 15. I will post my thoughts later.

I'll start tomorrow: I'll be going to the beach and I have a feeling this book will be a great choice for me to bring.

So I was out at the end of April and couldn't start this one, but I finally could yesterday.

What intrigues most about this book is the mythology (chapter 1 was amazing) but I'm sensing it will focus on the romance. I don't like Kahlen much and I feel like Akinli is too good.

I'm so sorry I finished this last week, but I didn't get to post anything because I had finals the last two weeks. I will be sure to reply to all of your comments thought.

I agree about Akilini. I didn't really like that it focused on the romance aspect more.

Up to chapter 14:

Kahlen: (view spoiler)[Every time I like her less and less. I just don't get her. She doesn't have much of a relationship with her sisters; I understand their situation isn't ideal but if someone could understand her, it would be her sisters. Also, they do everything she says; it's good that they're loyal but Kahlen doesn't even think things through. And even though she is the oldest, there are some things that they all should discuss, like moving away.
I also don't understand why she starts doubting everything right now. How was she before meeting Akinli then?

The sinking: (view spoiler)[Of course nothing happens to Kahlen. I was happy to see the others annoyed and surprised when she stopped singing. Maybe now they'll start doubting her. Or at least not doing everything she says. (hide spoiler)]

Padma: (view spoiler)[I "like" her backstory, but I wish we were given more. What I mean is that it's treated so lightly, but the topics themselves are not. You cannot say those kind of things so matter-of-fact and then go on to another thing. (hide spoiler)]

I completely agree with you about Kahlen. I didn't really like (view spoiler)[ Kahlen very much, and it seemed strange that the ocean wouldn't kill her but she would kill others who wouldn't sing.
Also, I didn't really like how Kahlen kept saying that Akinli was perfect because he was imperfect. I still don't understand why she had to move away from there when she barley knew him. (hide spoiler)]

Aisling was my favorite character out of everyone.

About Kahlen (view spoiler)[ moving away, I thought that too! They were living in a big city, he only knew his name and nothing else. It's not like she would have found him everywhere; she knew he worked at the library, so she was fine avoiding the library and the campus. I'm sure there were other places she could go! Also, if she wanted to move, it needn't be so rushed, poor Elizabeth and Miaka. (hide spoiler)]

I've just finished. Sorry if I didn't comment much, but there wasn't much to say.

Characters: (view spoiler)[I still feel the same way about them; I didn't like any of them particularly. I liked Aisling, but she left very early on, and I also liked Maika, but that's it.
And as I said, it's a shame we didn't get more of Padma's story or even got into the Ocean, that would have been interesting.
My least favourite characters were, of course, Kahlen and Elizabeth. I just didn't get Elizabeth's character. (hide spoiler)]

I think this book would have worked a lot better (for me, of course) if it were a spin-off or we already knew the characters and the mythology behind the book. (view spoiler)[We're not told much about it, as the romance is what's key here , and that was a real disappointment. However, I liked seeing little nods to different mermaid and siren interpretations and adaptations (the voices, other water spirits, the bird sirens, rusalkas...). (hide spoiler)]

I'm on my phone right now, so I can't see your spoilers, but I agree with you. I didn't really like how the romance played out. I really only gave this an extra star because of the cover.

I didn't know if I should give it a 2 or a 3 because I actually gave it a 2,5.

Padma (view spoiler)[I think it was a little harsh that she went and killed her parents. I think it would be more interesting to have a spin off from her point of view to see what happens there and see if she ever looses her memory. (hide spoiler)]

Siren (view spoiler)[I feel like they were about to find important information about Siren's, however, they just kind of pushed it off. It would have been a lot more interesting to know more about them. I think there were a lot of unanswered questions about this book because of that. (hide spoiler)]

I'm FINALLY getting to this one! LOL I'm on Ch. 10 so I'll post later today. I have to get to work. I'm liking it so far but not loving it.

I really like the idea of learning more about the Sirens. I've never known how, for example, in The Odyssey they lured men to their death. But (view spoiler)[reading about the Ocean needing to be fed is something I hadn't considered. I like the sisterhood and find the hierarchy, so to speak, interesting. (hide spoiler)]

Yes, I would agree with that. I don't know what I was expecting but I was hoping for more from a mythology angle, I think.
