I am honored and proud to share the Foreword for this book-written by Brooks Kohler:
It was in early 2016 when an email appeared in my box from an author asking if I would read her story about self-discovery. Little did I know that story would introduce me to not only history, but also an amazing literary talent.
As a writer, I know firsthand the hindrances that arise from being lavished with praise when seeking guidance. However, upon finishing my read of Becoming Malka, I had to know the author’s plans going forward because the novel was very well written.
From the correspondence that followed, it was revealed that the author, whom I now know as Mirta, had a familial connection with the book’s subject matter and retained plans to self-publish. When she asked me to consider writing a foreword, it sat me in my chair.
Never have I been asked to write an introduction. My queries from authors have been solicited for reviews and once for a book’s back cover. Therefore, I find it difficult to express how humbled I am to have the honor. To not detract, let me borrow your time to praise the pages you are about to enjoy.
A common trait that all good writers share is their ability to pull the reader in with a passion to turn the page. This is so important that some writing instructors claim the first sentence to a story legislates the power of the entire work. How’s that for pressure?
As a beta reader, a person who reads manuscripts and offers advice, I read a lot of stories, and no two authors write the same. All have their own idiosyncrasies and merit. Still yet, there are some stories that stand out above others and deserve praise; Becoming Malka is one of them.
I could not put this manuscript down. I breezed through it in what seemed like hours. While some stories have left me guessing, Becoming Malka left me imagining. Through skillful use of prose and well-researched history pertaining to Jews living in Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina, the book is more than simply fiction. It is an educative resource that will enlighten the minds of all who read it.
Being one who does not enjoy spoiling a plot, I am going to end now and let you get to what I am convinced will not be a chore of a read. We put up with a lot on this amazing planet to remain content. Thankfully, there are those who write well to help us manage.
