Starting to look ahead - here are some books that might be considered.

Before I Leave written and illustrated by Jessixa Bagley
"How do you say goodbye to your best friend?"
Age Range: 5 - 7 years
Grade Level: Kindergarten - 2

The Dead Bird , illustrated by Christian Robinson (Last Stop on Market Street), written by Margret Wise Brown (Goodnight Moon)
"One day, the children find a bird lying on its side with its eyes closed and no heartbeat. They are very sorry, so they decide to say good-bye. In the park, they dig a hole for the bird and cover it with warm sweet-ferns and flowers. Finally, they sing sweet songs to send the little bird on its way."
Age Range: 4 - 8 years
Grade Level: Preschool - 3

Another book.graphic/graphic novel/comic book to look at is Black Panther, Vol. 1: A Nation Under Our Feet> by Ta-Nehisi Coates and published by Marvel.

Here is a great review by Ty Burr of the Boston Globe:
https://www.bostonglobe.com/arts/book...

Marvel had pushed their media for years to be inclusive of their readers. (see the new Spiderman series also - I will add addition notes on that one later.)

Phil J | 19 comments Are there any chapter books out besides Booked? I'm trying to round up some ideas for summer reading, and that's the only one I've seen for 2016.

Phil,
I am reading the old Black Panther series both for interest and to examine how the story and characters have changed from the late 90s to today. I have the first volume but my local library also carries the older series in collected volume sets.

I have timed out for a few month looking at k-5 books but now coming back to middle school and young adult books.
