I felt like it was time for me to address it, so I made a blog post.

Jack (jackjuly) | 254 comments Verses what? Weak female characters? Almost strong female characters? Dancing on the edge of capable female characters? I like girls to much to denigrate them to the point of of being a distraction with a vagina. The women in my Novels are not written to be women or men with a vagina. They are written to be human and thus complete with the foibles that we all have. Yes, take into consideration, size and strength. However, mental capacity? The ability to be kind, loving or vicious? We're all the the same. Take them lightly and they'll take you the heck out.

I usually pick the character to fit the book. If a scene or a story calls for a strong female character, I create one. Weak or strong, male or female, the character must fit the role, or else the story becomes contrived.

Thanks for your thoughts. As someone who grapples with balancing fact-based fictional situations against the expectation of the suspense thriller genre, I appreciate a reader's viewpoint. Hopefully my lead character in Rare Mettle, Kay, captures the right mix of reality, toughness, and vulnerability as she faces tough odds in a global confrontation.

Declan (apiusmannovel) | 22 comments On the one hand, beating up on a SFC just because she's a woman who can kick ass is stupid.

But on the other hand, WAIF-FU ONLY WORKS IN SCIFI AND FANTASY. Thank you.

So ... just a thought. Or 10

J. | 9 comments When I was writing The Good Fight, I don't think I ever made a conscious decision for the hero to be a teenage girl instead of a teenage boy; as I recall, my fiancee and I had been talking about our future kids at the time, it had me thinking about whether I would change my parenting strategy for girls versus for boys, and the character of Terry just sort of manifested as a girl.

And then she smacked a monster so hard in the face with a broomstick that the broomstick broke :)
