Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Krypton, a concept show being championed for SyFy, is closer than ever to receiving the go-ahead to begin production. According to Entertainment Weekly, a deal is almost ready to be made. After being in development for two years by David S. Goyer (executive producer), and with a pilot co-written with Ian Goldberg, this show may finally see the light of day.

Set a full two generations before Superman’s story, the House of El has been shamed, and it’s up to Supergrandpa (that’s his actual name, I’m not kidding…okay, maybe I’m kidding a little) to restore his family’s name and save Krypton (spoiler alert: he fails!) from certain doom.

If given the green light, the pilot will be directed by one-time Doctor Who and Sherlock director Colm McCarthy.

With the success of Gotham, a precursor to Batman’s famous crusade against crime, could this show be just what Superman needs to draw in fans? Or does DC even really NEED another television show? SyFy has also changed course in recent months, putting an emphasis on more original and interesting science fiction programming instead of continuing to ride the wave of success brought on by such ridiculousness as Sharknado. Are they the right place for a show about Superman’s ancestors?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Only gripe I have about this is I'm not on the best terms with SyFy. They can produce some pretty bad stuff - although I loved Bitten, which they cancelled this year.

no thanks.

Jeff | 425 comments Ive know about this series for about a year now. And with Gotham really hitting on all cylinders this season, its picking up more and more viewers. Some viewers, friends of mine that thought Gotham was nothing but a piece of trash mostly because it didn't have Batman in it, of course, and because they couldn't make sense of the time line. Not a problem either, its pretty easy to make sense of it all.
The idea of "Krypton" doing the same thing, isn't all that far off base. Goyer knows a great deal as to how to bring this stuff together. And, of course, the opinion of some think that he is incapable of doing so, I think the opposite. I think he has a handle on the DCU. And if he does it right, making it like Gotham, bringing in familiar characters as a starting point before the Superman saga starts could make a good base for a good vision of Krypton and the way of life they might have led.
Syfy does have a tendency to put out some cheesy but for me guilty pleasure movies, but they have had some incredible series as well.
Of course you all know how I am.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments My worry with this is can you generate a big enough audience when they know the cast is all gonna die in the finale?

A movie about Krypton could be cool, but a series...?
Unless you have a strong game plan that could go off the rails faster than 'Lost'.

Like the idea, but I'm iffy on if it can work.

Jeff | 425 comments I will admit its a gamble. I didn't say it wasn't. I just thought it might be a good thing to see some origin stuff. But I will admit that you could be right. I do remember then the creator of Battlestar Galactica made a spin off prequel called Caprica. Thought it was going to be really good, and it had the chance to be, but it was so political in nature about how their government was run, tat it got bogged down. It was supposed to show the rise of the cylons, instead it basically showed how corrupt the government was. It didn't work.
But with familiar characters, maybe Krypton will be able to do it a lot different. Its already a established place and people as opposed to creating something new. We will see.

Travis (travishiltz) | 487 comments Oh yeah, Like I said, the idea appeals. I always liked in the comic where they'd do back up stories set in Krypton's history.

Just worried that the guys doing this have the big idea, but not a plan if it works.
They can't rely as much on the comics as something like Smallville and Gotham do, as they are more limited by the history.
You get the house of El, Zod and Brainiac, but not a ton more and you have to be just right in the timing. How close or far away from the big boom do you set it.

I'l check it out, but I've seen too many shows try for the big arc and fall apart and don't have much faith in Goyer, so I'm more cautiously curious than excited.

Be fun if they used some of DC's aliens races and space characters though.
