Victor goes to the Orkney Islands, but fears the creature is following him. He begins work on the female creature, but becomes racked by visions of a race that could plague mankind. When he sees the creature through a window, he destroys the female creature. The creature vows to be with Victor and Elizabeth on their wedding night. He then kills Clerval and leaves the corpse to be found where Victor lands in Ireland. Victor is imprisoned for murder and suffers another mental breakdown in prison. After being acquitted, he returns home with his father.

Wrongly believing the creature threatened his life, the night before their wedding Victor asks Elizabeth to stay in her room while he goes out to look for him. While Victor searches the house and grounds, the creature murders Elizabeth and taunts Victor with her corpse from the window. Victor's father dies in grief at the loss of his family, and Victor pursues the creature to the North Pole, but does not kill him.

Days after his crew's sightings of the creature, Captain Walton's ship becomes trapped in pack ice. The crew insists on returning south once it is freed. Despite Victor's entreaties to continue north, Walton agrees to head for home. Victor dies shortly after

Walton discovers the creature mourning over Victor's body. He tells Walton of his need for vengeance, and now his remorse since Victor's death has not brought him peace. His crimes have increased his misery and furthered his alienation. He vows to kill himself, and that no one else will know of his existence. Walton watches as he drifts away into darkness, never to be seen again.
