Lanelle | 462 comments Each month we will read a public domain book in a certain genre, about a particular subject, or by an specific author. Report which book or story you've decided to read. Feel free to discuss what you're reading and the author's writing style. Don't forget to leave a review of your selected work.

If you don't have much time, please consider reading a short story.

This month's focus is to read a book that has been made into a movie.
(You will get extra points if you can watch the movie.)

Here is a blog entry I found that talks about movies made from public domain books.

I just finished reading Babbitt. I was thinking of reading book by H. G. Wells, but couldn't decide which one. I then thought of some of the Charles Dickens books that I've read and enjoyed and know that there have been movies made based on several of his book. I went onto Amazon and found a six pack of his books in one volume for free and decided to download it. I don't own a Kindle, but have the Kindle app loaded on both my computer and android tablet. I've decided to start with The Old Curiosity Shop which has had some movies for tv based on it made. If I finish it early enough, I'll move on to the next book in the volume.

Lanelle | 462 comments Tim, Wells and Dickens are both wonderful choices for a 'made into a movie' book. I haven't even come close to picking out a book :)

I finished The Old Curiosity Shop last night. I've liked all of books that I've read by Charles Dickens. He had a style of writing that makes you not set to set the book down.

I am now starting to read Journey to the Centre of the Earth which is another book turned into a movie.

I decided to read The Count of Monte Cristo for three reasons.
1) I already watched its movie adaptation a couple of times ago on T.V.
2) Since I watched the movie, I am curious to read the original.
3) I want to listen to David Clarke's reading of the book. As he did an amazing job reading Conan Doyle's books.

Even though I decided the book to read, I am not sure if I will finish in one month.

Lanelle | 462 comments I've had a hard time deciding what to read until this morning when I saw an advertisement for the new Kate Beckinsale movie Love and Freindship, otherwise known as Lady Susan. So that's what I'm going to read.

I just finished reading The Time Machine.

I decided to change things up a little from what I've been reading and am starting to read Pollyanna which was made into a Disney movie in 1960 starring Hayley Mills. It's a movie that my wife and I both thoroughly enjoy.

Lanelle | 462 comments Tim, I went to check out your review of Journey to the Center of the Earth and
got a chuckle.

Your 'About Me' says "I was in the U.S. Air Force for 10 years, 7 of which was in Europe." My husband was in the Air Force for 9 years, 7 of which was in...New Mexico. Europe would have been nice.

Nice review, by the way. Good luck with the blog.

Limey (limeymonkey) | 66 comments Thanks to Tim for reminding me that I've read the Time Machine, which is definitely a recommended read, also because then, if you enjoy it, you can read (though you have to buy it, it's not public domain) The Time Ships, which is a quite gripping and brilliant extension of H.G. Wells' story.

Though this also reminded me of the stuff I wrote in other threads here about public domain law:

H.G. Well's stuff, until New Year 2017, is still outside public domain in many countries (EU, for sure), though, as I said, then all his stuff will be public domain in the EU, but not all of it in the USA.

Lanelle | 462 comments I just finished reading The Thirty-Nine Steps (for the 3rd time).

It's been made into a movie four times (1935, 1959, 1978, 2008). I have a copy of the 2008 version with Rupert Penry-Jones. It's a really good movie, but not very close to the book. Wikipedia says, "The storyline only very tenuously follows that of the book..." Oh well.
