So, is there anyone out there excited about this?

Ah, nice! Another in the prequel series :-) Yes, excited. Though I have yet to read the other books (the Legends of Dune trilogy and the first two of the Great Schools of Dune trilogy).

I'm afraid I happen to be one fan of the original 6 novels that finds his son's related novels as unfulfilling. Kevin Anderson can't save them either.

I was a huge fan of Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune. Then God Emperor of Dune killed it for me when the author began to wax philosophical, ad nauseam. I never picked up the 5th book. *shrug*

Heretics and Chapterhouse are good space opera all on their own. They pick up several thousand years after God Emperor and the diaspora is just making its way back into the known universe. I don't buy into the enemy being the machines used by Brian and Kevin. I wish they'd left the series alone.

I agree. I have to admit to finding the last two books something of a slog, but overall worthwhile; the last being completed and published not long before the author's death.

Its from the schools of dune series. You have to read both books or just be very disappointed. I am most excited about this next one!

I read the "House Of..." prequels and agree with Jim. The prequels are extremely bad books. They're poor exploitation of a classic series and are among the few books I've ever given 1-star ratings to. No redeeming qualities at all.

I muscled though to Sandworms of Dune and have no intention of ever tackling any of the prequels.

I dont know how people can do that. I HAVE TO SEE IT THROUGH, no matter how bad they are.

I'm kind of a completionist like that, too. Not completing a book really really nags at my brain, so it's pretty rare that I do that.

Book series are a bit different. After about the 9th or so Xanth novel, for example, I'd had enough (especially given that they were going downhill in a hurry, imo).

The new series of Dune books are why the word "execrable" Exists.

There really is no reason to read anything beyond the original 6 books by Frank Herbert.

I have an appreciation for the prequels and Hunters/Sandworms duology. It's definitely not the same as reading the first six stories, but outside of fan fiction or (in the far future) public domain Dune books, it's the only way to get closure to the saga. That said, I stopped after Paul of Dune, as I was not too impressed with that interquel.

I tried reading some of the stuff outside the originals and it just didnt have the same feel.

Neither of the authors have Herbert's facility with words. Nor do their words have the same depth as Herbert's.

I would have to say 95% of everyone thinks everything but the Original Dune Books are a waste of time... Well, I enjoyed them, and will continue to enjoy them. But then again, I am reading them in chronological order.

There are so many good SFF books why waste time reading works that are depressingly weak shadows of the original Dune books?

I'd recommend Brian Staveley, Richard Morgan and Brent Weeks.

It is on my shelf to read. i have all of them but the only ones i have reread seversl times are the original 3.
