Hi, did you know that May is National Short Story Month? If you love reading short stories, join us for our monthly "World Short Story Discussion Group" held on first Thursdays @ 7:00 pm at the Alexandria Burke Branch Library (4701 Seminary Road, Alexandria, VA 22304.) We are currently reading selections from "Esquire's Big Book of Fiction."

Do you have a favorite short story writer?

Here are some of my favorites:
The Lady With the Little Dog and Other Stories, 1896-1904 by Anton Chekhov
The Tell-Tale Heart and Other Writings by Edgar Allan Poe
The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry
The Lottery and Other Stories by Shirley Jackson
A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories by Flannery O'Connor
The Unfinished Novel and Other Stories by Valerie Martin
Mr. Bones Twenty Stories by Paul Theroux
In-Flight Entertainment by Helen Simpson

I'll post more titles as they come to me since I know this is rather a skimpy list..

I can't believe I left out Alice Munro and Steven Millhauser! Her stories are quite amazing and his stories are out of this world.
Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage Stories by Alice Munro
The Knife Thrower and Other Stories by Steven Millhauser

Dave | 4 comments I read a fair amount of fiction but primarily novels. That's why I joined Carol's short story discussion group several years ago, to give myself the opportunity to read more short stories. For me, it's been a wonderful experience, getting the chance to read several of the great short stories of the past as well as some of the best new short fiction.

One author not mentioned above in Carol's list is Richard Ford. I've read several of his novels as well as some of his short stories (I recommend his collection "Rock Springs") -- he's a master of both forms.

Thanks, David, for your feedback and so glad to hear that you enjoy the short stories we explore monthly in our World Short Story Discussion Group!

I love reading Richard Ford too. There's also one by the great Patricia Highsmith... an interesting but dark and misanthropic collection of stories about animals who attack humans...

I had read so many interesting stories over the years that I wish I had Goodreads back then to keep track of what I had read over the years..
