Barbara ★ I know it's not August yet, but I read this book last week and thought I'd post before I forgot.

I really liked the characters in this book. Ian Buchanan, is a loner who has shut everyone out of his life. There is something unknown inside him that is trying to get out so he keeps to himself, until Molly Stratton arrives. The dead talk to Molly. Specifically Ian's mother, who sent Molly to Ian with a warning. Ian fights the attraction with Molly in an effort to protect her from himself. He is fighting his inner beast who needs to be awakened in order to defeat the demon that is hunting him and anyone he cares about.

Ian's siblings are also involved as "The Merrick" resides in all of them. His brother Riley, is the sheriff and his sister Saige is an archeologist.

This is a well-written starter to the series. It draws you in immediately and interests you in Riley and Saige's coming stories.

Sarah | 276 comments I'm 128 pages in, but I'm finding my mind wandering quite often. I don't guess I'm really identifying with or caring about the characters very much. Everything seems very intense and melodramatic without giving me reason why I should care.

Is there more backstory to come about the Merrick and Casus? Maybe that's what I'm missing.

message 4: by Barbara ★ (new)

Barbara ★ Yes. It is a slow start and it takes a while to really figure out what is going on. It should start picking up right about where you're at. Keep at it.

Lesley i just finished the book and i have to say i am disappointed.
the first part of the book i liked a lot. but once molly goes from "we can't be together ever" to "i will do anything i change my mind" i started to get bored. to me she was such a strong woman dealing with all she had, and ian turned her into this puppy dog latching onto him for affection and any sign of love.
also ian went from a sexy, stubborn, brooding man to an emotional, depressing mess.
and the chapters with the killing and raping of the women? i skipped after a while. i get the point the bad guy is evil.
is anyone else disappointed?

Unapologetic_Bookaholic I believe that every romance has to follow that age old formula and the author can tweak it to best suit the story. I liked how Ian personality was dictated by the fact that his Mother kept saying what he was and what he will be. He did not ever expect to be anything more than . So meeting Molly and having an immediate attraction all he expected was to have his usual physical reaction and be done. When he saw that his life would be causing Molly much more pain and sacrifice, he actually got scared.

I thought the when will they consummate dance went on a bit longer than needed but I was grateful for the dreams so that Molly and Ian felt an immediate connection.

The history of what the Merrick and Casus were helped the story along but I feel that the next book has more to reveal. Having a female Merrick will reveal yet another secret.

I like how Rhyannon Byrd casts her characters. I think she does a great job and I really look for to Book #2 Edge Of Danger

***Stars
