Copied from Shelfari: koren56
A problem I had with getting the authors announced was that sometimes it would take one to two weeks for a member to respond to me that they wanted to choose the author of the month. Now that everyone has had a chance and no one else has told me they would like to choose, I will post the next months schedules. Be thinking about what you want to do. I would like everyone to choose an author thinking about what you could use for a discussion topic, for instance, this month is male versus female authors and try to lead a discussion on your topic. It will be up to the person choosing the topic to lead the discussion. Deal? I will post this in a separate discussion so it is more visable to everyone.
January: Eileen
February: A.R.
edit
March: --continuing February AotM
April: Zippy
May: K.A.
June: Rita
July: Bel
August: Koren

If there are others who would like to pick authors of the month, please let me know by posting in this thread. As you can see, we don't have people for Sept, Oct, Nov and December. I can start the list over, or we can do something different.

Anyone on the list who cannot participate please let me know. Craig was on this list but since no one has heard from him in a while I took his name off. Worked out well since we extended Feb to March because of Shelfari .... well you know.

I was going to see if anyone new wanted to pick an author. I also had an idea of something different to do. Take a break from Author of the Month.

I'll be posting a poll tonight when I get home.

I don't think she writes true crime.

message 8: by Sue (new)

Sue Williams (goodreadscomcatfish95969) | 7 comments Nope, the stories are fiction but the crimes being committed are going on today. I guess I got ahead of myself.

Fishface | 18986 comments Sue wrote: "Nope, the stories are fiction but the crimes being committed are going on today. I guess I got ahead of myself."

I'm confused. Is she writing fictionalized accounts of true crimes?

message 10: by Sue (new)

Sue Williams (goodreadscomcatfish95969) | 7 comments True in the sense that animal trafficking, catching and killing animals to cut off/out one part to sell (gallbladder, rhino horns, shark fins etc.) and catching and selling endangered species take place everyday. Her protagonist is a fiesta wildlife agent named Poppy McVie that goes after these disgusting people. Poppy is fictionalized; the crimes are happening.

Fishface | 18986 comments Ah, I get it, thanks.

message 12: by Shelley (last edited Nov 22, 2016 12:47PM) (new)

Shelley | 1225 comments It's funny, though, when I think of True Crime, I think of murder and murder of people. Others would think of the mob and still others of bank robbers. But crime against animals is 'truly' a crime as well. :(

So, it's funny because I just realized how narrow my True Crime tends to be.

I think we will have another challenge for December. Then for January Eileen aka FISHFACE, can pick an author and villain of the month.

Actually Jan and Feb. I'll explain my reasoning when I can get to a computer.

Well, the genre as a whole tends to stick to rape-murders and intrafamilial homicide type of stuff. Not that there aren't stories written about flimflam artists and bank robbers, but somehow they get excluded from the true crime genre; they call those history and biography. I really think that's why they always call Manson a serial killer, so he can be the king of crime. Calling him what he is, a terrorist, just isn't the same, somehow, but we can include him if we call him a serial killer.

Changed the title of the discussion, we will still have authors of the month, when that happens the Author will be the challenge. Also I will use the schedule listed, so we could have an Author of the month for April if Zippy wants to pick one. If not, K.A. could pick an author for May.

It sure makes some true crimes happen!

The moderator asked me to ask for suggestions for April's challenge of the month. Zippy is on the schedule but since she hasn't posted here in a while the moderator wants to do another challenge.

message 22: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18986 comments Well, let's see...associations with April. Murders in shower stalls? Nahh...

The Girl in Alfred Hitchcock's Shower
Body Double
Picture Perfect: The Jodi Arias Story

There are more of these than I thought!

There seem to be a lot on Forensic Files, but IDK how you would search for books on the subject.

message 26: by Fishface (last edited Mar 22, 2017 04:18PM) (new)

Fishface | 18986 comments The Manson Family members who killed the LaBiancas took showers after they killed the couple. I wonder if that would count. And what about murders during a rain shower? A baby shower? A bridal shower?

message 27: by Fishface (new)

(I doubt there's a book on it)
This: http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/l...
(same problem -- no book)
And it's too soon for a book on the Golden Showers affair, I assume:

Shelley | 1225 comments LOL I thought of the "Golden Shower" incident too! :)

There are these bathtub ones:

The Magnificent Spilsbury and the case of the Brides in the Bath
Lots of books on John George Haigh, Acid Bath Murders
Drew Peterson
Andrea Yates

It's a hard thing to search on to find books though.

Fishface | 18986 comments Shelley wrote: "Hasn't there been a lot of bathtub murders too? (where the body is found in the bathtub either killed there or left there)"

Murdered and/or chopped up in the tub:
Stolen Away: The True Story of California's Most Shocking Kidnap-Murder
Jean Paul Marat a Study in Radicalism
The Class Project: How To Kill a Mother: The True Story of Canada's Infamous Bathtub Girls
The Magnificent Spilsbury and the case of the Brides in the Bath (this was before showers were in common use)
Are You There Alone?: The Unspeakable Crime of Andrea Yates

A real irony here is that Ed Gein -- the model for Norman Bates who committed the most famous shower murder of them all -- not only never killed anyone in a shower stall, but clearly was not a regular user of his own shower. OK, I'm just being silly I guess.

Clearly -- and as usual -- Shelley and I are thinking along similar lines, but I have to take issue with the Acid Bath murders. Johnny Haigh shot his victims and then stuffed them into a barrel which he filled with hydrochloric acid to melt them down.

I didn't know Drew Peterson killed anyone in the shower! I keep not getting around to reading about that guy.

I haven't read about the Acid Bath Murders. I assumed it was a bathtub.

Shelley | 1225 comments Wasn't the actress who was the body double/stand-in for the famous Psycho shower scene murdered in real life?

EDIT: Note to self - Yes, she was murdered and Fishface has already listed the book about the case. :)

message 34: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18986 comments I count 27 books on the Jodi Arias shelf. We could just all pick one and read that, although honestly, that maybe would have fit better under the Deadly Love challenge.

Because I'm read the book, (and I am a stickler for details) body double and stand-in are two different things. The actress who was the body double was not murdered, the stand-in was.

Aaand that spoiled the ending of one of those books.

Shelley | 1225 comments What about murders (or true crime) involving movie/tv stars? I just ran into a book called The Valentino Affair: The Jazz Age Murder Scandal That Shocked New York Society and Gripped the World and it hit me that there must be a lot of books on similar crimes.
