Third possibility: literally anything by Sarah Addison Allen, especially Garden Spells or Lost Lake .
I want funny! Or at least light. No slog. Something written relatively recently, though doesn't have to be set in current time.

Pettigrew has a lot of humor. Or, maybe we want to reconsider The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society?

Plum Island. Not funny, but super fast read. And timely since they're trying to decide what to do with it.
Since only three of us were at Panera on Sunday... we decided to read one of Helen Simonson's books. The new one is only in hardcover, so Major Pettigrew's Last Stand it shall be... Plenty of humor, Ryan, and the setting is a little English village.
