Hey everybody!

Starting up the June '16 discussions here! This month we'll be reading Lord of the Flies as our Classics book. This discussion will be SPOILER FREE so if you have read the book already, please keep the mystery alive and head over to the second discussion that allows for spoilers.

If you have suggestions for next month's Classics book, please make them known in the BOTM suggestions folder.

Happy reading!
Kasey

Luella | 97 comments I was wondering what editions everyone one read of these? I read one with essays and what not. It helped me get through the story as this one was a DNF for me in high school.

I think sometimes, your personal maturity impacts how you can read a book. I DFNed The Lord of the Rings the first time I tried to read it, only to fall in love with it two years later.

Kandice I know a lot of kids in my children's classes hated this book and read it kicking and screaming, but all three of mine loved it. Hmmmm...I wonder what that means? ;-)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I loved the audiobook read by the author, and so did my teen son. (But he probably would have liked it in a cheap pb, too - it's provocative, his kind of book.)

Aesaan (highlycaffeinatedreader) | 94 comments Looking forward to picking it up soon :)

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) Welcome Readers! This is the March 2019 bookshelf catch-up selection. It is the second time it has been featured as a BOTM. Enjoy! And please remember to leave the spoilers for the SPOILERS thread.

Renee (elenarenee) I hate this book. I have discussed it at least seven time before and each time I hate it more. I will read along with the discussion. I am trying to see why so many people like this book.

Kyra Keeton | 282 comments My students are reading it right now, so I am rereading it with them. I have always really liked this book, and the cultural influence is so big. Lately, I have been noticing all the references to it. I'm planning on showing my students clips that mention Lord of the Flies.

Ildiko Nagypal (inagypal) | 17 comments Thank you for selecting this book, it was on my waiting list for March so I'm going to read it along with the other group members.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) I somehow missed reading this book in school, so I'm looking forward to reading it now and seeing what all the fuss is about.

Shea | 6 comments I'm in as well. This will be my first read.

Tracy Challis (tracychallis) | 5 comments I think this book is great to discuss though I can’t say I like it. Looking forward to hearing people’s impressions though I am not sure I want to read it again myself.

Um, yeah. I'm about halfway and I see what you mean.

Joanna Loves Reading (joannalovesreading) I should be starting within the week.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Starting today!

Laura (lfergu11) | 106 comments This will be my second time reading this one. Just getting started on it today. I would definitely agree with Tracy that this book is great to discuss, but it is definitely not a favorite...

Storm | 170 comments I was assigned this book in school bu didn't read it. Glad to read it now and then see what I missed

Melinda | 117 comments I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not I’m going to read this. I never had to read it in high school. It seems like some people really like it or really hate it. Once I start I will have to keep going whether I like it or not so I’m still on the fence! I guess I’d better hurry up and decide since 1/2 the month is already gone. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Ami (amiray) | 14 comments I am a high school English teacher. I missed out on this book when I was in high school. I can’t wait to read it!

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) | 697 comments I read this novel a very long time ago, plus I saw a movie based on it. The movie was made with British boys. They begin as boys who are used to formal school procedures and civilized rules, but they begin losing interest in keeping up that way. The movie was helpful because of being visual. The small size of boys and their immaturity and their ages from six to twelve was quite clear. Piggy was obviously very very intelligent. Amazing movie and book.

Hello Readers!
This is the Pre-Read thread for the June 2022 Bookshelf Catch-up selection. This month we will be reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding.

Please note that this is a SPOILER FREE discussion.

Who's planning to join in on this read? Why did you choose this book? Any expectations?

DaCane (esotarotdacane) | 13 comments Heard it spoken of tbr in a movie where someone was forcing the kid to read it and read it fast but it was the reason the kid was wing forced to read it that drew my intention so when the notification popped up on my screen I read the write up and well it has me interested…so I am in…

Just to share the context was of him making his own decisions and him being different from his friends in some regard because of his family background - which he was rich with a long line of successful men behind his family name - so…I’m in lol

message 24: by Andi (new) - rated it 4 stars

Andi | 373 comments I am joining in on this one. It has been on my TBR list for a long time. I read many classics back in high school but not this one. Even so, I have reread many of the classics as I want to get my adult perspective on them.

Kylie Stoneburner (lunchbox89) | 197 comments I can’t believe I’ve never read this yet. It’s about time I did. I’m a little anxious though because from everything I’ve heard, I get the idea that there’s a lot of animal killing and child violence? 2 things I can barely stand.

Um, somewhat. Not overly graphic, but it's in there.

Quinty (Taylor's Version) (queenq) | 286 comments I'm probably going to join this, since it's so popular, but I honestly can't tell if I'm going to like it or not. Leaning towards not, but maybe it'll pleasantly surprise me. But this is one of those books I feel like you have to read at least once

Alexandra | 1 comments I’ll be joining in on this book read (: I’ve always wanted to read it - my English class was the only one that didn’t get this for assigned reading .. lol

Adriana | 212 comments I've had this book on my TBR since 2017 I will finally get to mark it off

message 30: by Kesa (new)

Kesa (mastoureh) | 21 comments Wanted to read this for some years now. I've read Wilder Girls in 2020 which premise is kind of similar(?) to Lord of the flies I think. But obviously this one is a dystopian classic, somehow confused on how I haven't read it yet. I'll definitely read it this month.
