Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments If you are participating in this month's group read, join in here to discuss just how horrible these characters are. ;-)

If you've already read the book, feel free to join in too.

Remember to spoiler-proof your posts with the spoiler tags: < spoiler > at the beginning and < / spoiler > at the end (but remove the spaces).

Kirsten (kmcripn) I thought this was a nice fun read. But I'll be watching this space since I've never seen any middle ground on this book. People seem to either hate or love it.

I read this book in the beginning of last year, when the hype had just begun. I was expecting to hate it, because I never like hyped-up books, but to my surprise, I loved it! (I admitted that grudgingly at first.) Sometimes (okay, often) I feel like my life is just a mess in some sort of downward spiral, so in a way I could really identify with the main character (I'm sorry, I can't remember her name), laid off and popping her gin-and-tonics on the train.

Fannie D'Ascola | 443 comments I just got a call from my library today for that book. I will be able to participate this month. Yé!

AF (slothlikeaf) | 410 comments I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. I kept thinking I knew what happened and who did it, but I kept changing my mind. Rachel was sad and pathetic, but I couldn't help liking her. Megan was sad and lonely but also messed up, but I couldn't help liking her. Anna was a self-centered whiner and I couldn't stand her. And the men- all so different, yet all so similar. I'm glad I finally read it. :)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm so glad there are so many people that enjoy it as much as I did. Anyone else imagine Tom Cruise in the role of Tom?

AF (slothlikeaf) | 410 comments Tom Cruise would be perfect for Tom!

Lindi (lindimarie) I read this last summer and I can't wait for the movie now. I kept changing my mind as to who it was. Had me guessing :)

Judith | 11 comments I read this last month and I'm sorry to say that I didn't like it. I was curious though who did it, but it is not my favourite type of book. I never read thrillers, because they leave me unsatisfied. This one didn't do it for me either.

message 10: by Cher (new) - rated it 3 stars

Cher | 5 comments I am currently reading it. I can't say that I don't like the book but somehow it is not quite engaging. I found myself already reading this for more than a week in between other books.

Charlotte Weber | 274 comments I read it last month and I felt similar in the beginning. I wasn't entirely engaged and I couldn't relate to Rachel but toward the middle, the intensity picked up and became a great page-turner. It kept me guessing.

Fannie D'Ascola | 443 comments I read more than half the book and I can't put it down. But I can't say that I like it. I'm having trouble to like the characters even if the suspense is good.

Exactly right...!!! After the 65% mark, things got interesting..somehow Rachel became the sanest one among the messed-ups and the insanes. I like the writting, but unfortunately for the dreading 65% I can't say this is my favourite

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I don't quite see why everyone hates the characters so much. They weren't necessarily the most sympathetic, but to me, they seemed very real. I read this last year, and I really enjoyed it.

I've been a little surprised at the Rachel-antipathy, because I really identified with her! I mean, I'm not laid off, alcoholic, and drinking g&t's on the train, but I could that happening to me if a few things went wrong. So, am I messed up in some way? Or am I just REALLY in touch with my inner-potential-disaster? It's making me wonder!!

Charlotte Weber | 274 comments Maybe that's why most people don't like Rachel is because they see the potential to become her in themselves and that's rather scary.

Katie Kaste (brite0321) | 26 comments I found all three of the female characters in this book disgusting. I did not see myself in any of them. They can't pass the Bechdel test. On the second chapter I predicted an ending that would make me unhappy and that is what happened. I respect all people's opinions, in fact my aunt recommended the book. So I am glad people like it, however it was not my cup of tea.

Kirsten (kmcripn) This always cracks me up. Every group I've been in that's read this has had a split - and a lively one - on likes and dislikes of this book. No one ever says "ho hum". Either you really, really hate it. Or you think it was so engaging.

I am in the second camp. I didn't think it was a "great" book, but I did find it a page turner and very engaging.

Luella I read it last year, my opinion is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
