But having just finished Dragon Keeper, I now have to say, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Hobb's familiarity with rural Alaska (and it's remote, wild, muddy, boggy, mosquito-infested upriver areas) influenced her in this book, and possibly in others as well.
Also I must admit, I've always been inordinately pleased that the map of the Realm of the Elderlings is an inversion of Alaska... :)

I think her upbringing in Alaska is apparent in the Tawney Man trilogy during the expedition to the glacier and the boggy swamps in the Dragon Keeper story is also reminiscent of that region. The Farseer Trilogy and Buck Keep in particular seem to take place in a climate very close to Tacoma Washington, the place Robin Hobb calls home now.

Got me thinking about Fitz and the several worlds, and this one refers to them all which is heartening.
Got to see Robin in Glasgow this month which was pleasing I understand her a bit better knowing that she was btought up in Alaska.
am reading this fairly slowly,am in that liminal place between the anticipation of success and the fear of disappointment...
