the comment was about times when new posts aren't marked as "new."

This reminds me that I'm wondering whether more topic relocation is needed so that posts don't go to many multiples of pages, or folders don't get too unwieldy. I'd like to invite input here.

There are two issues that need to be balanced. One is the time it takes to move topics to archives, and it turns out it is a bit time consuming to navigate back and forth to do the moving. The other is that people differ in how much they want at their fingertips in the current folder. I think we've picked out the obvious moves - birthday threads, previous months' current reads. Are there other folders/topics folks would like to see weeded down?

A reminder -- one cannot move posts within topics, so the only solution for a unwieldy topic is top start a new topic and move the old topic to an Archive folder.

I am open to whatever the majority of group members think, and would hate for either you or Cheryl to have to go to a lot of time to archive stuff.
At first I was put off by the multiple pages threads, but I may have become better attuned to how to maneuver around the quirks so they are ok for me. The ability to mark unread is a HUGE help.
That said, not all of our group members are as frequent a visitor, so the older really long threads may cause problems for others who would see hundreds of posts and not want to enter. We may be able to naturally migrate to new threads when one gets a bit unwieldy and the the ones with a say, 45-60 day lack of posts, could go to archives?

Carol, I could have written what Ann said. I'm on the fence and will go with whatever the board thinks is best. I think of the temporarily lost posts as a nuisance, not a deal-breaker. I do sympathize with people who come here only occasionally or for the first time and face the long threads. When I open a new Goodreads board, I find the number of posts daunting and that's why I've not become involved with any except those I began with.

Gack, I was just thinking about this this morning as I participated in a conversation that's gotten started in the Introduce Yourself topic. It would be better to leave that thread as "clean" as possible, but sometimes a conversation just naturally pops up. On another board I've sometimes tried to copy the conversation to another topic, but then you often end up with the same conversation going on in two different places.

Carol, do what you think is best. You always make decisions that are fair and since you're the one who has to do all the work, you should have the biggest "say" in the issue.

I agree that Carol should do what she thinks best. I've been reading a thread on Goodreads Feedback from a moderator that hates seeing multiple threads on the same topic and wants to be able to combine them into one long thread. Honestly, I'd prefer the multiple threads. I have no problem going to the unread topics button and then locating the specific posts that are unread in each topic.

Ann (annrumsey) | 17099 comments Jan O'ThoughtfulCat:
We are of the same mind, and I think most of us (regulars, moderators and quasi-moderator advisors) like those spontaneous conversations even while we generally agree it might be more welcoming to future new book friends if the Introduce Yourself thread would stay "clean".
Wanting to help keep the Introduce Yourself thread clean wars with my feeling that it is "unwelcoming" to not comment there on actual new friend's posts. At least there they would get an email notice we commented and might find our welcome comments easier. (unless of course they turned that GR feauture off) That alert feature may be why a moderator can't move single posts. So, cringing a few timees, I have participated in continuing threads there too. :)
I know I have paticipated on new boards on AOL or new groups here to deaf ears and a welcoming return post is rather nice. I guess we'll just keep doing the best we can to keep our group humming along. I love this place and all of you!

I like this approach. I'd like to take this endorsement and apply it to all areas of my life.

So it's finally come to that. I suppose all that's left is for her to decide whether she wants to be called "Queen Carol" or "Empress Carol." It's the end of civilization as we know it.

And Princess Melodie weighs in with a perceptive observation! I think my royal court is developing nicely.

Well, you're definitely a royal pain in the ---, so I guess you're on the right track.
