This part gets a little gruesome but not quite as bad as seeing it. She's still very silly. Her writing improves when she's writing to Roland or in her diary but her memoir writing is fairly dull. I'd rather read her diaries.
As sensitive and silly as Vera is, Edward is way too sensitive to go to war.
Roland is growing up without Vera. He's becoming war weary already and she still sees war as a romantic game. Her impressions are shaped by the biased and inaccurate media reports.
This is kind of a slow section.
