Getting so far behind... I can't even see the earlier weeks' comments. I hope everyone is enjoying this... I hope to have a copy in my hands next week.
Vera returns to Oxford while war wages in Europe before leaving school to become a nurse. Roland gets leave and they become formally engaged. They quarrel by letter. Vera works too hard and needs a rest. Roland gets some leave time and Vera arranges for her time off to coincide with his. This part gets a little gruesome but not quite as bad as seeing it. She's still very silly. Her writing improves when she's writing to Roland or in her diary but her memoir writing is fairly dull. I'd rather read her diaries.
As sensitive and silly as Vera is, Edward is way too sensitive to go to war.
Roland is growing up without Vera. He's becoming war weary already and she still sees war as a romantic game. Her impressions are shaped by the biased and inaccurate media reports.
This is kind of a slow section.
