There are a few.. I can't remember the ones that broke my heart in recent years. But in my teens I was moved to tears by 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry and 'The day of the Triffids' by John Wyndham. God... those 2 stories were really depressing at points.
I'll comment more when I remember other books that depressed me a lot.

The Long Walk by Stephen King/Richard Bachman. Damn!!!! That book was DARK! It's about a race. 100 young boys leave the starting line together. Their are many rules of the race, all of which are aimed at keeping the boys just walking and walking. Any boy who stops or becomes too slow is given a warning. 4 warnings and (view spoiler). The last boy remaining is the winner of the race and the grand prize. I've read it a few times over the years. Damn, heartbreaking is too good a word for this bleak book.

The Valkyries - Paulo Coelho : It was so bad it almost broke my heart. That's it. I don't read stories for that reason: they suck.

Are you talking about Room by Emma Donoghue? It has a movie adaptation too and i guess it won the Academy award too.
I've yet to encounter a book that has made me cry or broken my heart. I'm not exactly fond of emotionally manipulative stories. Is that weird?!
Ayesha wrote: "I've yet to encounter a book that has made me cry or broken my heart. I'm not exactly fond of emotionally manipulative stories. Is that weird?!"What! Never? Hmm...... i have an exactly opposite nature in this matter. I love emotionally manipulative books. And movies too.
Man-o-Salwa, also by Umera Ahmed. Pretty much anything she writes is guaranteed to make you either bezar or depressed or hearbroken. Quite possibly all three.
Sara wrote: "Man-o-Salwa, also by Umera Ahmed. Pretty much anything she writes is guaranteed to make you either bezar or depressed or hearbroken. Quite possibly all three."True :'(
I like books that are able to entice an emotional reaction from the reader. Warna book parhne ka mazza nai atta :p
Maira wrote: "I like books that are able to entice an emotional reaction from the reader. Warna book parhne ka mazza nai atta :p"Exactly Maira :D emotional attachment with the book is necessary so choose book wisely :)
Seher yes exactly. I remember reading Beloved by Toni Morrison and the horror I felt when I read it was because of the emotional investment of the writer in it. what we feel is the crux of what the writer wanted you to feel when they write a novel. so I think its there in every novel or piece of literature you read. It just needs to be explored.
@MairaI've read certain books that i get so attached to and it's like i'm living the whole story andeven when i find a mich beyter book thats less thought provoking i don't even rate it 5
