Impromptu BUDDY READ - The Princess Bride
Great news, I am really looking forward to this.. How does it work as I haven't done one of these before. Do we have a starting date?
Buddy reads are meant to be informal. YOU guys call the shots. Since this is a cult-favorite and everybody, their brother and their dog has seen the movie, I wouldn't worry too much about spoilers. It might be fun to discuss differences between the book and the movie.
And then, of course, there is the end which refers to a non-existent future book. Maybe once we're done we can write a group story.
And if you want to post pictures, use the 'some html is ok' to pull it up.

I also love this movie and have it on DVD. it will be a classic for generations to come. I've never done a group read but for this one I will since I've always wanted to read it.
Just so everyone's on the same page for this impromptu buddy read, we will be reading this for the month of July, correct? Just want to make sure no one will miss out on the opportunity to discuss the book/movie. On a side note: I can't believe I don't own a copy of this movie yet. LOL
I want to be a Dread Pirate Roberts!!! Meeeee!!!
Why don't we start July 1st when I'm back from vacation and have an internet connection faster than the dialup I'm using right now to check in and say hello? That will give me a chance to send out a group email.

I have both apps. I was going to listen to the audiobook. There is only 1 person ahead of me so hopefully it won't be long. If it does take too long, I'll send u a pm. Thank you very much for the offer.
I'm offline this weekend which will be a good opportunity to progress through the book. Back on Sunday - have fun.
Cheers Graeme
35% in - just completed the scene where Inigo Montoya battles the Man in Black.Story is great, loving it. Really simple, immediate writing that allows the characters to live on the page.

Wow, you are fast. Did you bother with the forward, I was getting bogged down in it so decided to skip to the real start of the story. I loved the line, 'The horse's name was Horse (Buttercup was never long on imagination).
Hi Jane, I did skip the forward - wanting to get into the entertaining meat of the story.
I'm also enjoying the out-takes, re Morgenstern, - these are quite funny.
I skipped as well. I was kind of confused at the beginning because I was expecting the whole scene where the grandfather visits his sick grandson. Totally didn't get that. I did like though how Westley got more attention. Not sure what the whole thing about the countess being attracted to him and the count being attracted to Buttercup. And the whole thing about the cows kind of confused me too.
I thought the same Nicole. I was like, wait a minute. This didn't happen in the movie lol. I'm 22 % through and after reading some last night I'm enjoying the book.
The book is providing a little background context with the farm, and it quite quickly moves on.I read the countess' attraction to Westley as a way to say 'he's a hot guy,' without simply stating that.
I find myself visualizing the actors from the movie for the each of the roles - except for Prince Humperdinck - who's appearance is drawn very differently in book to the movie.
However - everyone's personality is spot on.
It's a lot of fun, and I'm glad that I finally got to this book.
I'm at 20% and I think I'm starting to get more into it too. I was laughing at the part Buttercup told Westley she loved him, then he shut the door in her face. lol
Lol I had to re read that one twice by I wasn't sure if I was reading it right. Then he's telling Buttercup he's going to America to make his fortune and it was like pulling teeth getting him to tell her he loves her. I was laughing
This is one of my favorite books and I just read the recent book/ biography by Cary Elwes on the making of the movie. Loved it and it made me smile so much. I might see if I have The Princess Bride on my shelves or at the local library.
I loved the Carey Elwes book and would definitely recommend it if you love the film. I am realising more and more as I read the book that the casting in the film is just perfect. I know Humperdinck is different but I can't imagine anybody else playing the part now.
I'm still waiting too, there's still one person ahead of me. I have no idea how much longer I'm going to have to wait, as once you check an ebook out you can have it for up to 21 days before you have to either renew or return it, so it could easily be September before I get to read it at this rate. Obviously everyone else will be done with it by then. :-P
I'm waiting for the audiobook. but I think you can keep them for up to 21 days as well. but right now I'm finishing up The Terror. it's been so good! and I have several others waiting to. I kinda got carried away this month.
I just decided to go ahead and buy it. Not like I won't ever read it again! Can't wait to get started.
Nicole wrote: "Is anyone else skipping over the italicized parts or is it just me."Perfectly ok to skip over the inserts. William Goldman is doing quite a lot of breaking the 4th wall which is a fairly risky technique for an author as it breaks narrative flow and the immersive reading experience.
The inserts need to be entertaining in their own right and well contexted to the story - or else they are distractions.
Unfortunately, they are a mixed bag and at best have produced a wry smile from myself.
I just looked and I have a physical copy. I own 4 books by him including Adventures in the Screen Trade - also brilliant if you're curious about how movies get written and made.I thought at first I had no italics but I flicked through and I do. It'll be interesting to see what I think about it now. I know they didn't bother me when I first read it. I even have a cute little colored fold-out map. Is that in the newer ebook editions?
