Lynnm | 3025 comments It is time for nominations for the August 2016 read. Since we are in the slow summer months, please nominate a novel under 400 pages so that we can complete it comfortably in one month. Once again, please only nominate if you intend to join the discussion if your book wins. Nominations will close on July 2nd or once we have 8 nominations, whichever comes first.

Lynnm | 3025 comments I'm nominating Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." I was going to nominate "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," because it is a perfect summer book - it positively screams summer. But, there aren't many themes embedded in the book. So, I thought Huck Finn would be a better nomination.

I'd like to nominate The Master of Ballantrae.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is in fact the book that Lynn nominated, not Tom Sawyer.

Thanks Frances.

Casceil | 216 comments I had not heard of Moonfleet before. It sounds intriguing.

message 11: by Jon (new)

Jon Abbott | 112 comments I nominate two short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne: Young Goodman Brown and The Minister's Black Veil. Each about 50 pages.

There are quite a number of Hawthorne short story anthologies; whether both are in one I'm not sure. Those I checked - which are not all of them - did not have both.

I have not read either. I am relying upon recommendations of others.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 975 comments Ooh! Moonfleet right up my alley! I’ll second that.

Jon, save those selections for December. We usually read short stories during that month because of the holidays. Nice and short when people have less time to read.

During August, we are looking for regular length novels.

I'd like to nominate the The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

message 15: by Jon (new)

Jon Abbott | 112 comments Ok, Lynnm. How about James Fenimore Cooper's first Leatherstocking Tale: The Deerslayer. Although it was the last or next to last of the five books to be written, it is the first chronologically.

If I understood the group's bookshelf, the group read the most well known, The Last of the Mohicans, previously?

message 16: by Renee (new)

Renee M | 803 comments Yep. We read it in January.

Definitely a good one! (And I hated saying 'no' to the short stories, but we try to stay with novels except for December).

And yes, we did just read The Last of the Mohicans.

The American by Henry James was nominated a couple months ago but came up second place in the polls. I'd like to re-nominate it.

Lynnm | 3025 comments We have 7 nominations so far.

I have (and check me to make sure I'm not wrong!):

1) The Adventures of Huck Finn
2) Moonfleet
3) Little Women
4) The Master of Ballantrae
5) The Invisible Man
6) The Deerslayer
7) The American

One more to go...first come, first serve. :-)

Hi Lynnm, Gem-I believe The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories is actually a short story, and what Gem has linked to is ? a graphic novel version. Lynne-your call-but perhaps it should also wait for December.

My fault - I forgot that Sleepy Hollow is a short story rather than a novel.

Gem - let's leave Sleepy Hollow for December as well.

And I'll edit my above post.

Gem | 1232 comments Mod
No problem, I can wait for December but NOT as a graphic novel shivers. That was what came up when I searched, I didn't look very closely... I won't make that mistake again.

How about The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde NOT the graphic novel version grinz .

Gem - great choice!

And yes, no graphic novel versions. I didn't think that is what you meant anyway though. :-)

message 25: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments We have our 8 nominations...all great choices!

1) The Adventures of Huck Finn
2) Moonfleet
3) Little Women
4) The Master of Ballantrae
5) The Invisible Man
6) The Deerslayer
7) The American
8) The Picture of Dorian Gray

I'm going to wait a day to put up the poll just in case I made another mistake. :-)

P. S. Thanks, Deb, for linking me. :)

Lynnm | 3025 comments Well, I set up the poll but for some reason it won't let me start the poll right now.

It will be available at 12:01 a.m. US EST June 29 (tomorrow).

Thanks for the info. I get to do this next month. I may need help, but I will try it first on my own.

message 32: by Lynnm (new)

Lynnm | 3025 comments It's relatively easy, Rosemarie. I've done this before, and don't remember this happening before. Usually you can post a poll, and have it start immediately. I must be having some type of brain blip today. :-)

Rose, thanks for the offer. If it doesn't post by tomorrow morning, yes, I definitely can use the help. Lol! But it is set up, and supposedly will post tonight. We'll see.

message 42: by Everyman (new)

Everyman | 3574 comments The poll is there, but because you didn't make it a Featured poll, it's listed after all the Featured polls, on page 2 of the polls, in position # 44.

If you can edit it, it would be good to do so and check the box that says to make it a featured poll on the home page. that way it will show up at the top of the list when somebody clicks on the polls link.

Rochelle - we already made it to 8 (post # 25).

And I'm going to lock the thread since the poll is up.
