I apologize for being a bit late, but we have an alligator problem. It's not our problem, but it's playing hell with the ducklings my wife has adopted
So then, my book is entitled
The Last Ranger of Sarn
. It's the story of one young woman named Vespias Firstlight.
Her story starts where most of ours does...at birth. The child was hunted almost as soon as she was born. Her father was a hunter himself, wise in the ways of stalking. In fact, her village was made largely of hunters. When their dread enemies the Junin attacked, they were ready.
Even so, the child was almost taken.
Thus, the child began a life where the Junin would always be her enemy. Or so she thought...Her childhood was much the same as any normal Castian child's would be. Except, being one with nature, on her twelfth birthday, she was introduced to her companion. He was a soft bundle of fur and she named him Kasi which in their language means wind.
Suddenly, in her still young world, circumstances turn dark for the girl. For years she has been practicing and preparing for the hunt with her bow.She finds herself in a situation where her parents are endangered and she uses her skills to take two lives.
The impact remains with her, eating away at her slowly for the next four years.
She turns to drink to help ease the memories, but when the storms come there is no escape. They mock her and whisper to her...
They tell her the truth...
Truth always hurts more than any lie ever could.
But, as in the ever-changing cycle of the wheel, eventually she rebuilds her damaged psyche and sees the world in its beauty again. She sees the man she will fall in love with and one day marry. She sees hope again.
She does not see the world outside of her homelands changing. She does not see the evil growing in the guise of the Black Prince and his army of dead. His sights are set on Castia, and the treasure it holds. The Gems of Creation. With them, his power will be complete.
When he comes, the army of Castia is ill prepared for him. Only one is ready to challenge him...
General Salaris Woodward, Commander of the Castian Army and in particular, the Sarnian Rangers.
But even the elite Rangers cannot hold back this evil. Castia must send its militia to fight. It must send its youth.
Vespias and her fiance must postpone their wedding and take up arms. She finds herself leading a small contingent of militia to the front lines, the Pass of Sarn. There she falls under the scrutiny of General Woodward who sees qualities in the girl.
In the weeks that follow, Vespias shows herself to be very good at the art of war and strategy.
All goes smoothly until the Black Prince arrives at the Pass. His march and conquest of Castia is about to begin. The first assault is devastating and for a moment, Vespias is sure she will not see the coming spring.
Until an unlikely ally steps in and turns the surprised Prince back to regroup.
When the Junin leader speaks with General Woodward, Vespias is mistrustful. She becomes indignant when she is ordered to escort him back to the capitol city of Tiran to speak with their king.Still, she is a soldier and she has her orders...
Along the journey, she comes to find out why the Junin are eager to change and especially why they want to change her mind...It seems, that their destinies were written eons ago.
The stories of the Junin people told how they would be broken by traitorous deeds, but they had a salvation.
A young girl, not of their world, the daughter of a simple hunter would prove herself in battle and show the Junin people how to be strong again. She would unite the two races...
Well well well, would you look at how I've prattled on!Our time is nearly through and I haven't even gotten to the best part of the story...
The story of Vespias is not like many other stories. She's no superwoman, able to wade through her life and her enemies with no marks to show. Both leave their scars on the young woman. She is strong, but also fragile. Her heart is brought to the limit of agony time and again.
Her superpower is in her ability to find a way to pull herself back up from defeat. She may not be complete when she stands, but still she does stand. She fights on.
She does not quit.
How much emotional punishment is too much? How long before the heel of the world crushes her, holds her down for good?
How much could you take?
