The audio of this book was well-done with a good narrator. The story begins at an inn with an inn-keeper and his assistant who seem to be more than you would expect, more than the way they present themselves to their customers. There is something very evil in the outskirts surrounding the town and inn that is keeping the inn-keeper on the alert. That is all interrupted by the appearance of a Chronicler who was waylaid on the road by robbers, one of whom is actually quite civil. The Chronicler is on his way to a commission with a well-to-do family but stays at the inn to recover a bit. He discovers the inn-keeper's secret and is sworn to secrecy himself but agrees if he is able to document the story of the inn-keeper,a hero who, for reasons we hope to find out, is in hiding. He real name is Kvoth and he will tell the story in his way. So the reader is taken back to Kvoth's young life, his very beginning.
This fantasy is set in a time that brings to mind medieval times with minstrels and traveling shows, institutions of higher learning, (a nod to Hogwarts?), superstition and magic. The story is good with the occasional step back to the adult Kvoth and the Chronicler who is writing the story as fast as he can. The danger outside the inn is still lurking there and that comes up during these breaks in the story of Kvoth's youth.
I enjoyed this enough to look forward to reading and/or listening to more.
