Lots of good characters. I'm gonna wait until I'm done with the book, though. I'm a little more than half way through and there's just more and more happening.
Maybe some spoilers here:
Samuel - A good heart and spirit even though his land is rough and he is not wealthy
Lee - Really interesting character - living a stereotype because it gives him the upper hand.
Adam - Kind of pathetic
Cathy/Kate/Whatever the heck she is going by - Crazy, pure evil, her antics have me riveted!

Oh, yeah . . . I am close to 2/3 of the way through, I can't help but think that Steinbeck had some seriously bad experiences with women.
Favorite character in the book has to be Lee - he is the glue that holds everything together and really is the catalyst for a lot of the progress made.
Cathy/Kate - maybe the best female villain ever - I love to hate her!

Yup I totally agree........Lee is great! He's so intuitive and yes very true that he does hold everything and everyone together.
Adam is just sad. Cathy/Kate is scary. Cal I ended up rooting for.
I think Lee is now in my top 10 favorite literary characters. He is so interesting and complex - really makes the story blossom and brings characters and storylines together.
Ha, Samuel. I actually came back to East of Eden because the writing in the Nix reminded me that I have wanted to comment here. Interesting.I agree with everything that's been said, however, I thought the only characters that were interesting were Lee, Cathy... and the Sheriff. Yeah, Cathy was singularly focuses, but crazy as all get-out.
The Sheriff, though, maybe you don't remember. There was this scene where Cathy came to her new town and the Sheriff saw right through all her bullshit and still, still thought it'd be more prudent to let Cathy roam free and do as she pleases. The alternative being to drag her home and have her face her parricide (probably a death sentence). Though, he can sense her evil, his heart goes out to the idea that people can change and reform and be more than their history. Turns out he was just wrong. Making him maybe the most intriguing person in the story to me... behind Lee.
