Line (linesheridan) | 8 comments This morning, when I went to Amazon.com (I do that very often, looking for new stuff), Amazon had news for me. There's a new book you might be interested in, as you've previously bought books from this author. And yes I have, I love the various trilogies by Trudi Canavan, and yes, I would be interested. So I click on the link, and in the book description it says: "Special Offer: Pre-Order the ebook edition of Thief's Magic by Trudi Canavan for only $2.99."

That's great - except I can't pre order the book from here. I contact the amazon chat support. And well, being a non-us customer, I can't get the promotion - but why direct me straight to this page? Why even let me see the promotion?

I understand the issues with publishing rights. What I don't understand is Amazon guiding me directly to the promotion. It's obviously not relevant for me, and well...Amazon has my details, so they should know this already.

If they are not going to let me take advantage of a promotion, maybe it would benefit both Amazon and me to just...you know, not show me the promotion. This annoys me greatly. I'd have never seen the promotion, if Amazon had just directed me to the page with the book for non-us customers. Now I am annoyed with Amazon, the publisher and some innocent customer service rep. I am even slightly annoyed with Trudi Canavan, although this will pass.

Vanessa Wester I can understand it... You have basically wasted your time on a wild goose chase! How annoying!!! Grrrr...

Breathe deep - the vultures continue to swirl overhead...

Line (linesheridan) | 8 comments On the bright side...the non us edition will be published five days before the us edition. That's comforting.

Vanessa Wester A pot of gold at the end of the rainbow... Maybe? :)

Simon (Highwayman) (highwayman) | 4276 comments A lot more expensive in the UK though...

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56524 comments £7! Sheesh

Vanessa Wester Saying that... It is 560 pages! The size of two (or three or four in a lot of cases!) normal sized paperbacks!

Saying that... My entire trilogy, 900 plus pages, is only £3.50! Then again, that's indie pricing for you...

Only traditionally published books can charge that much to recoup the cost of their advertising, staff outlay, etc, etc, etc
And it looks like it works - at the end of the day, quality will sell no matter the price. If you really want something you will pay... It always amazes me what a lot of women pay for shoes, makeup, etc! :)

Line (linesheridan) | 8 comments I don't actually mind those prices. A newly published book in Denmark costs 299 DKK, which is around 25-27 pounds. Although the big supermarket chains often sell them 5-10 pounds below bookstore prices. But I mind the whole "here's an offer, we'd like to show you, but hey, forget about actually taking advantage of it, because we only show it to you to get you interested". Don't b****y well show it to me then.

Vanessa - do you write fantasy?

Vanessa Wester I agree... I hate mis-selling! Drives me mad! I actually had a great conversation with a pupil the other day & tried to explain to him the evils of supermarket "offers". I told him I usually go around with my calculator brain trying to weed out the real best offers! Lol

As for what I write, my trilogy is supposedly a "NEWADULT paranormal romance". The reason for the uncertainty is that loads of reviewers say "this is not my usual read, but...". So, I think it is a "growing up" adventure with a hint of the paranormal thrown in!

But, I would not call myself a paranormal writer since I am currently working on historical & Chicklit fiction novels! I think I am still flexing my brain muscles and trying to figure out what I want to write (if that makes sense).

Btw... Amazon infuriate me a lot! Oh well :)
