Nope; I'm passing on this. The trailers were awful.
$0.02.
$0.02.
I saw the premiere and I loved it to the core. Therefore SPOILER ALERT.
The intro/theme was spooky and dark in nature, the story, well, the first episode doesn't give away much, but I got hooked on the vampires and creatures from the Victorian Era, as well as the perilous narrow alleys of England which added a special chill altogether. It is supposed to comprise of influential horror literary figures like Dracula, Frankenstein and so. The cast is also impressive, Eva Green steals the show and Josh Harnett is a delight to watch. To recapitalize, I'm anxiously waiting for the forthcoming episodes of this ominous storytelling!
I watched it on Hulu and enjoyed it. It has some interested characters. I like the creepiness. It shows vampires how they used to be before they became nothing but romantic interests. I'd continue but I don't have showtime.
Auden wrote: "I watched it on Hulu and enjoyed it. It has some interested characters. I like the creepiness. It shows vampires how they used to be before they became nothing but romantic interests. Trailers look great so I'm going to wait for a few episodes to air and then watch all in one day.
I'm also a fan I guess of Eva Green, so should be good.

I watched episode1 last night (in the UK) and I thought it was excellent. Timothy Dalton and Eva Green were both up to their usual high standards and I was pleasantly surprised by Josh Hartnett, he was pretty good too!The introduction of Frankenstein at the end was really creepy. I'll be watching again!
I've been watching each week, and just when I can't be more shocked... I was warned of such voyeurism in preview, but oh my! Honestly can't pull this off without an impressive cast.
So many different actors from various other series that they just seem to be populating this awesome show with. And this required something like Showtime to pullout all the stops. Trying to figure out where each classic character is coming from and what they are doing in this Who's who of Universal monster characters. Haven't figured out yet where Universal's Creature from the Black Lagoon will fit in though lol
I think combining all these classic monsters into a show is a really cool idea, but so far the concept hasn't really paid off for me. I'm still waiting for the plot to start moving and make a story out of all of it.
I love the slow dramatic buildup. Unfortunately, the mystery isn't really effective, because it's too obvious that Ethan is a Lycanthrope and that Mina ran off with Dracula. They should just have out with already !
Well since we haven't seen a full moon transformation of Ethan yet, I think they just want it to happen then. I'm sure it was their intention of not trying to keep it a mystery, but letting everyone get an idea that he a shape changer, and then when it happens, I'm sure its going to be quite a change visually, at least I'm hoping it is. They want to go for the shock & awe I'm sure. Which I'm ok with.
I'm also wondering is the murderer is not Jack the Ripper as some are really thinking and just Mr. Hyde, which I'm sure it is.
I'm skipping Game of Thrones for Penny Dreadful tonight. If I have time before bed, I'll try to watch Thrones, but its 2nd fiddle to Penny Dreadful for now!And yes! Mr. Hyde...he is bound to show up!
Eva Green's performance in episode 5 gave me the chills! Incredibly powerful, I thought.I don't recall seeing her in anything else up to now, but I'll be sure to keep an eye out for her in the future. Brilliant actress.

Eva Green was in the 2012 Dark Shadows movie and in the up coming Sin City sequel.
I liked the first episode, but thought the second one was a bore-fest until the very end scene. I need to catch up on the recent episodes tonight or tomorrow!

She also gave a great performance in Casino Royale, the rebooted James Bond movies.
I know I'm going to sound like I live in a cave when I say this, but I don't think I've seen any of those movies! I did see 300 when it came out a few years back, but I don't remember Eva's role in it.Anyway, thanks for the info, all - I'll be sure to check out some of her other performances in the near future :)
Sunday's episode was quite shocking. I love Eva Green's performance in this show. I also haven't seen her in many other things. I have to watch "300" again.
Jon wrote: "I did see 300 when it came out a few years back, but I don't remember Eva's role in it."I believe they are referring to the sequel.
Jody wrote: "Richard - I haven't seen the sequel, but she's definitely the queen in the first film."You mean Queen Gorgo? That is Lena Headey.

Apologies. I don't know where that swing and a miss came from me. Headey is even in Dredd - one of my favourite films. I stand corrected! Thank you Richard!
Anyone notice that Timothy Dalton looks exactly like Sir Richard Burton , the famous African explorer? http://content.artofmanliness.com/upl...
I don't have showtime anymore but I did watch the premiere online and it was very goo, imo. I didn't know it was available on hulu!!
I just went to hulu. It seems that only clips are available. Not full episodes. I am a hulu plus subscriber. Am I looking in the wrong place?
Decent enough finale, I thought - no surprises, though; it all pretty much ended as expected. (view spoiler)Predictions for season two:
(view spoiler)
Love the show, although I've yet to see the finale. So I won't read too many of the comments for fear of spoilers. I will say I've noticed a lot of you cannot watch it due to access issues. I watch on http://www.free-tv-video-online.me. Living in Dubai, I need that site a lot! :)
I really enjoyed the season finale. There were some things that did shock me but made a lot of sense.I'm looking forward to season 2. I hope to see other 18th/19th century horror characters though.
Well done finale. I agree, no surprises but wonderful acting. Can't wait for additional characters and further developments on current ones as well.
I agree with you Jon with your predictions.
I hadn't realized when I first posted the limitations with it being on Showtime...
Season 1 of this series was amazing, i'm addicted I can't wait fort season 2 which will have 10 episodes. I was a bit disappointed that Dracula isn't a character in the series yet but Sir Malcolm hasn't found him yet. I didn't really understand why he said he would kill Vanessa to save Mina when he killed her anyway because she was a vampire, I thought it was a waste. Hopefully since this this series is set in Victorian London a few people that were around at the time would be mentioned such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, The invisible man, The Wolfman (although technically there is a werewolf character already) and Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper or Sweeny Todd since they were there in the same era. Dr Jekyll would fit in well.
I read some information, that might be considered to be a spoiler, so if you don't want to know, then don't read this part. Ethan, is a werewolf and a former priest so that's how he was able to exorcise Vanessa when she was possessed by the devil. However, I think if Vanessa wanted to have an exorcism it would free her of her gift (she is a medium/psychic) so she would be normal. I don't think that she wants to be ordinary, she likes her gift, even if it causes her pain, it's the only thing that makes her unique or special just like the priest was explaining to her. There would be no way to tell if it would work, or if she would be free of her gift if that is what she wanted. Sir Malcolm is Vanessa's Father, since her said you are my daughter or I already have a daughter so it made it seem like now that Mina is dead Vanessa will take her place. Season 2 will not be on until next year, but I can't wait. There is always American Horror Story: Freakshow to look forward to plus I am going to check out Hemlock Grove since I have never seen it and it is being advertised a lot on tv at the moment, so i'm curious.

The season was great. Not going to lie, Sundays are a bit boring now since the season is done (along long with Game of Thrones. I would go back and forth between the two). If there ever is an episode featuring Lovecraft or Poe characters, that would be my favorite episode. I would settle with Jack the Ripper and Dr. Jekyll.
I've seen Hemlock Grove. It was ok for a while but I got tired of it by episode 6. Definitely give it a shot though if you like Eli Roth's style. I can't wait for American Horror Story: Freak Show. It looks awesome.
I thoroughly enjoyed it and the scope for the introduction of new characters, as Carly and Alexandria suggest, is almost limitles. It had a brooding quality to it, which sometimes verged on the sedate, but it worked very well.
I'm looking forward to the second series.
Carly wrote: "Hopefully since this this series is set in Victorian London a few people that were around at the time would be mentioned such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. If this series takes place in victoria's very last year that would make him eleven years old and his fame would probably not reached quite as far as London at that point.

Aye but Dorian Gray was 1890 and Frankenstein was 1818. I think we have to susdoend belief a bit here. Historically accurate it might not be but good fun it most certainly is!
Sounds like I am missing out on a good show. I have the episodes on DVR. I am going to check it out soon.

Even though Lovecraft didn't reach fame until after 1900, it would be really cool to see Herbert West in a Penny Dreadful episode, in my opinion. lol!
Alexandria wrote: "David wrote: "Simon wrote: "Carly wrote: "Hopefully since this this series is set in Victorian London a few people that were around at the time would be mentioned such as Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Love..."I hadn't even considered this. Herbert West would be great!
They'd have to get Jeffrey Combs to play him, though! He's practically essential to any Lovecraft screen adaptation and, to me at least, he'll always be the face of Dr. West :)
