You can only books count books read in August 2016 onward. You can count them for the Winter Olympics challenge, though,
This is a really cool idea. I have posted it to my corner in another group and will be keeping it in mind for the next couple of years. I will post here if I am actually able to medal, but I will be keeping track in my corner if that is okay.
I think this is a cool challenge. At first I was thinking that a silver medal doesn't seem that hard based on the number of countries that won medals in 2010. But then I realized that 2010 was the winter Olympics, and I wanted to see what the medal count was in the last summer Olympics. So 85 countries won a medal in London in 2012 and 54 countries won a gold. Still doable in the time frame we have, but a lot more intimidating than I thought.
I 'm still struggling with this year's olympics. Will wait til it's all over then get organised. Like the suggestion to incorporate the refugees taking part.
I am in. I just missed the Bronze Medal for the last Olympics challenge by 5 countries. By the time I realized it was ending, I didn't have time to get books for the last 5 countries. Oh, well. Reading is fun no matter what, and I am definitely in for this next challenge! Thank you, Diane, for putting this together for us.

I still want to try to join in for the bronze medal, I like the fact that we can start this friday! It will be hard since I've got a baby on the way, but who knows. All those sleepless nights ;)

You make a great point about Polish literature. I have noticed a lot of new and translated fiction recently, most of which is not about WW2. I think it used to be that most of what was translated to English and readily available in the US did seem to center around WW2. This is very understandable given the circumstances. I also see similar situations in other countries that experienced catastrophic historical events. I am excited to see the emergence of new voices and more frequent translations of books, new and old.

I'll give you some suggestions (hopefully) on Tuesday, bit too busy now.I noticed the trend to translate "flag topics" translations on international market (aka English). But it works differently too. Now in Poland I think there is a rise for books by Ukrainian authors - both about politics (Russia & Ukraine), history, culture or just contemporary writers.

No, no specific genre although I am not a big fan of romance or sci-fi. I guess something about the culture of Poland is what I am most interested in.

Poland: Stacja: Nowy Świat (no English version) and Poganka by Narcyza Żmichowska (classic writer, feminist). Her book is available in English (The Heathen).
Egypt: Egipski erotyk by Yusuf Idris. Dunno the English title, it comes from a stories anthology by Idris, published somewhere before 1980 originally.

Not sure what you mean with the "culture of Poland". As for the Polish books. Contemporary but classics is Stanisław Lem (author of Solaris) but it's not about Poland and it's sf. But this is one of my favourite Polish writers, so I'll still recommend it for others. One of the buzz making books in Poland were: Lubiewo Lovetown if you want Team LGBT; Snow White and Russian Red by Dorota Masłowska. How about: Illegal Liaisons, books by Olga Tokarczuk (household name in Poland) or Zygmunt Miłoszewski's crime stories? I only seen a film adapted from his work about the murders in Sandomierz A Grain of Truth. The film was full of Polish history/culture refferences, but not sure how is the book and if it'd be understandable for you.
