"This is where I buy most of my stuff from." Sierra said as the entered the shop. "You should try out some of it. You might find something you like."
Miranda looked at the wide expanse of clothing in front of her. She had changed out of her sweats into something more acceptable before leaving- a cream blouse and navy skinny jeans, but still felt horribly underdressed upon entering the store. There were racks upon racks of expensive and trendy clothing in front of her, and she felt slightly overwhelmed. But she went over to the first area that caught her eye, the dresses section, and began looking through that.
She looked at a navy knee-length cowl neck, browsing until she could find one in a size 4, and then checked the price tag. She sucked in her breath upon seeing it. Unlike clothing stores where she used to shop at, this store had clothing that ranged everywhere from 3 to 5 digits! However, Miranda did like the dress, and she had brought enough money to purchase it, so she brought it over to Sierra for approval. Holding up the dress, she asked, "What do you think? It's pricy, but I like it."
Sierra felt at home in the shop. She was used to expensive clothes because her parents got her a lot of those. She was examining some dresses at a corner when Miranda came to her. She had just picked up a purple dress with long sleeves that was, of course, very blingy. She looked critically at Miranda's dress and nodded. "Seeing your clothes, I never guessed you had such a good choice. I actually have nothing bad to say about it. How much does it cost?" she looked at the dress, knowing it would proably be a lot.
Miranda turned pale. "Uhm," She stuttered. Looking slightly embarrassed and bashful, she mumbled, "$699." She felt bad about spending such an absurd amount if money on a single dress, but she rarely shopped, so she told herself buying this one dress made up for all the times she hadn't gone shopping, even though she knew that wasn't true.
"Oh. It's not that bad." Sierra said, shrugging. "I thought it would be a lot more." she didn't seem to notice Miranda's discomfort at buying a dress priced so obnoxiously. "You should buy it." she continued. "It'll look nice on you."
Miranda shifted uncomfortably, "You think so?" She wanted to be absolutely sure it was perfect before purchasing it.
Miranda let out a breath she hadn't known she'd been holding. She was glad Sierra had noticed, because she thought it would be embarrassing to say so herself. Nodding, Miranda said, "Yeah, I actually am. I mean, I can afford it, it's just.... I don't know, it seems wrong paying so much for a dress." Shifting her weight from foot to foot, she continued, "I guess I should get it, as long as I don't make a habit out of purchasing ridiculously overpriced things."
Sierra smiled. "I never think about things like that." Sierra said. "Actually, it is wrong but....I can't seem to help it." She shrugged. "My parents have money that's rotting and they give me a lot of it because I hardly ever see them so I always buy the clothes I like no matter how expensive they are." she held up the purple dress. "Like this one. I'm sure it costs more than yours."
Miranda felt sick to her stomach, "More?" She really didn't know how people could spend so much on a dress. She hadn't ever considered herself a frugal person, she'd never really thought much about money, but she realized now that there was a limit to her spending. Setting her mind, she decided to get the dress, but from here on out, she'd be more cautious about money. "Alright, I'll get the dress."
"Great." Sierra went back to searching for a dress for herself. She discarded the purple one deciding she already had a lot of purple clothes and looked out for some other colour. She didn't realize what effect she'd had on Miranda. She was used to spending a lot and didn't shrink back from what she liked for such a trivial thing as cost.
Miranda rang up the dress, and walked over to Sierra, now carrying a Barney's bag in her left hand. She saw Sierra was still looking at new clothing. "See anything you want?" She asked, peering at the clothing Sierra was currently looking at.She had wanted to help Sierra choose an outfit, but figured Sierra's sense of fashion was better than hers, so she wouldn't be much help.
Sierra sighed. "No." she said, "I guess all the good ones are sold already." she set down the dress she had been holding and went to look at another rack. She saw Miranda holding the bag. "You're done already?" she asked, shocked. "That's all you wanted to buy?" she looked at the solitary dress in the bag.
Miranda was taken aback, "I usually don't spend over 700 in a single shopping trip." She shook her head in confusion, "I don't really need much more than this, and it was really expensive." Sighing, she continued, "I just feel really guilty spending large amounts of money at once."
"But you have a lot of it, don't you?" Sierra said frowning. "Then what's the problem?" she dropped the pile of clothes she'd collected in her endeavor to get something good and brushed down her clothes. "Well, I guess we sjould get going anyway." she said. There's nothing here."
"I mean I have the money, but it doesn't mean I have to spend it. Besides, there's people who don't have the financial privileges we do, and I feel... I don't know... Bad." She felt awkward talking about this with Sierra because Sierra looked like she didn't think the same way as Miranda did when it came to money.
Sierra looked at her as if she was talking a different language but still, nodded as if she understood. "You're right." she said. "In some sort of twisted way, you're right but..." she shrugged. "I can't help it," she said. "I like only the expensive clothes. The others are not even worth bothering about."
Miranda sighed, "It's alright. Let's just go back to the Institute now." She subconsciously realized she didn't call the institute home, yet.
"Okay." Sierra said, starting to walk outside. She really did not understand why Miranda was acting like this She'd never been worried about spending.
