Rosemary | 86 comments Has anyone read this? I really enjoyed it. I think it's my favourite Dorothy Whipple so far. It's very unusual for an English novel of the time, in that it's about a woman who works in retail and is successful in that. It's not just a fill-in or a stepping-stone for her. And the kind of small northern town it's set in, isn't a common setting for novels. So I found it very refreshing, as well as involving.

Allison (allisonsracquet) | 2 comments I would say The Priory was probably my favorite by Dorothy Whipple book. But I did love following Jane's success in High Wages.

Rosemary | 86 comments I haven't read The Priory yet, Allison! Looking forward to that one :-)

Susan | 236 comments I'm not finished, but I really am enjoying Jane and the ways of the shop. May turn out to be my favorite Whipple, but I've only read two of her novels--Greenbanks and Someone at a Distance.

Danielle | 4 comments I loved High Wages. It's a little old timey and reminds me more of the Closed Door than Someone at a Distance. I love strong female protagonists. I liked her imperfection and growth. I'm looking forward to the new set of short stories coming out in October.

I loved this book too! It was fun to see Jane's transformation as she became more confident and opened her own shop. I really like the way Dorothy Whipple develops her characters, and her writing is just so easy to read!
