Auguste Kopallik (1850-1929) was the daughter of a government official in Vienna. In 1879, she married journalist Richard Groner, who encouraged her to write.

Auguste was more popular than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle at the peak of her career as a writer of crime stories, then completely forgotten until recently.
