This is the second book in a series but it is self-contained. My husband had read the first and we needed an audio for a car trip. Jefferson Tayte, a family historian, has been hired to find the birth mother of Eliza James. Fairly quickly he figures out who he thinks is the mother, but looking into what happened to her leads to some hairy situations, like being held at gunpoint. The story actually flips back and forth between the current investigation and the back story about what happened to Eliza's birth parents.
Overall, this was a satisfying read. The present day story had lots of suspense and I enjoyed the past story and characters. There is some of a back story about Jefferson Tayte's own history which I didn't feel was necessary because that storyline was not advanced at all in this book. I think I will continue to look into the series and it's available on Kindle Unlimited (which means it's free). I would say that the writing was a little rough around the edges --- nothing annoying though.
