Borbála Gombos | 1 comments Beautiful Broken Things is a contemporary fiction novel, which revolves around the lives of three friends, Caddy, Rosie and Suzanne. The book was first published in 2016 by Macmillan Children’s Books.
The book is written in first-person narration, by Caddy, therefore we can only know her thought process and how she feels about different situations and people. She is more of a shy person and wants to broke out of her cage. We can see character development with her during the book, as she becomes more and more confident. Suzanne also goes through character development, since she starts her journey as a cool child who seems to have no issues at all. It will later be revealed that her life is not as perfect as Caddy thinks so, and Suzanne needs to face her problems and she will do so. As for the character of Rosie, she pretty much stays the same during the novel, however, she started as the glue between Caddy and Suzanne and at the end, they will not need that glue anymore.
As Caddy loses her spark of friendship with Rosie, she develops it with Suzanne instead, which she never thought could ever happen. Which the readers also never thought could ever happen, but it does. Even though their friendship will never be the same as was with Rosie, they have something special – they share secrets, adventures and memories together, which are their own and no one else's.
This book is really about friendship and how they deal with it. When you get to the end, you will know that losing a friend can be just as heartbreaking as losing a lover, if not more so. When you finish the book, you will feel the urge to write to your friends if they are okay.
The title of the book is very much perfectly fitting since friendships are ‘beautiful’, but they can easily turn into ‘broken things’. If you have had a best friend in your life, you can certainly relate to this book and will definitely touch your heart as it did to me.
