Nik Krasno | 19888 comments You've earned (big ?, if possible), made, stolen or extorted considerable wealth? Your local tax authority will eagerly share the results of your success with you. But if you don't like partners, the world is a pretty diverse place, where some domiciles will embrace you without monetary consideration. Here is the list of some most desired locations:

Would you park your Lamborghini, anchor your yacht or land your Gulfstream to stay in one of those? They probably offer comfortable ambience for writing too

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments Where do I gas the Gulfstream?

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments I offer a multiple choice at the beginning, but it's definitely a question for a separate thread -:)
From writing? The lottery has higher chances -:)

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments From writing? Lolol.
To be honest I can't write in luxurious settings. Give me my little study, my second hand French provincial desk and my puppy chewing on a toy by my side.

message 5: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments Well, the Bahamians might be a little disappointed, but they'll get over, I guess.
Plus, the puppy needs to become a seriously rich dog -:)

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments That she does! Lol pets are *not* cheap. She deserves to be rich because I can't write without her.

Jen Pattison | 409 comments To answer your question Nik, having lived abroad and pined for my rainy island birthplace, I'd opt to pay the taxes. After all, if I became very rich I could employ a very good lawyer and accountant to think up legal tax avoidance schemes for me. Looking at my book sales though, I don't think that HMRC are going to be breathing down my neck in the foreseeable future. :)

message 8: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments You've made a huge leap forward out of debt and I hope you'll make another one into the riches, so HMRC will honour you as a distinguished taxpayer! -:)
Tough from writing, not probable, but not impossible either

message 9: by Jen Pattison (new)

Jen Pattison | 409 comments Thanks Nik, I hope the book does do well. I certainly do feel wealthy now to have a bank account in the black when it was in the red for years!

message 10: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments You've done it, Jen. Now the sky is the limit!

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments The summer must be nearing, as I recall exotic locations, where on top of usual 'paradise' setting, the tax regime is usually lax..

message 12: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments For some of us, the summer has passed, and it was a dreadful one. For what it is worth, autumn is not much better, with the residues of two cyclones in a little over a week. (And residues still with 150 k winds and serious rain - a pleasant Easter experience for a number will be shovelling the mud out of their houses!) For what it is worth, exotic locations in the South Pacific also get hit with cyclones - in the north they call them typhoons - so maybe staying in cooler places is better.

And probably a taxation a bit higher than on BVI or Seychelles? -:)
Hope natural calamities will take a break from pounding South Pacific and you'll enjoy a nicer fall

message 14: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments The big stuff is supposed to hit here in 3 hrs. Fortunately, it seems to be fast moving so things should be a bit better tomorrow morning. Thanks for the thought. As for taxes, we do not operate on a calendar year, and tax returns are something that will be high on my list of things to do soon :-( (It is also time when one views one's book sales for the year and once again, sigh.)

J.J. Mainor | 2440 comments Here in the US South, we had summer in February - usually the coldest month of the year. Now gearing up for Summer II...

message 16: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments So, where would you hide with your loot? -:)

message 17: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Nik wrote: "So, where would you hide with your loot? -:)"

No idea. The question only arises when you have loot :-( .

message 18: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments :-)

message 19: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Ha! Scout confesses to having loot :-)

message 20: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments A smile isn't a confession :-)

message 21: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Good as, unless of course Scout is denying having loot :-(

message 22: by Philip (new)

Philip (phenweb) If someone has Loot I've been looking for him/her for years. Last seen disappearing in 2008 financial crisis. Sure they are hiding somewhere?

message 23: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments Would you move to a tax haven after making it big time?

message 24: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Hypotheticals are difficult because one doesn't really know until it happens. Making it big time has eluded me so far, and is likely to stay elusive, so my view is no, I would not move because I am too stuck in my current environment. I am happy where I am with what I have, so why move?

message 25: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments So nice that you're happy where you are.

message 26: by Ian (new)

Ian Miller | 1857 comments And I hope you are happy where you are too :-)

message 27: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments I'm happy to live in a free country. You are, too. Maybe think about that.

message 28: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5048 comments Nik wrote: "Would you move to a tax haven after making it big time?"

I think it would be Switzerland for me.

message 29: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19888 comments Yeah, the only country that applies direct democracy regularly

message 30: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments Are you happy with their tax rate?

message 31: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5048 comments Not in the least. However it is a very stable country and I am not worried about my money disappearing anytime soon.

message 32: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments As long as government spends sensibly with the citizens' welfare in mind, high tax rates make sense. I'm just too used to a government that takes in a lot of tax money and wastes it. I don't know much about the Swiss govenment, but it must be doing something right.

J. Gowin | 8023 comments Scout wrote: "As long as government spends sensibly with the citizens' welfare in mind, high tax rates make sense. I'm just too used to a government that takes in a lot of tax money and wastes it. I don't know m..."

The problem is that even a government which is somehow absolutely efficient with YOUR money still assumes it knows better how to spend YOUR money than YOU do.

message 34: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5048 comments In some respects, they do understand better.

message 35: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments But how to keep them honest?

message 36: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5048 comments I do not think you can.

message 37: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8089 comments Why do you prefer Switzerland?

message 38: by J. (new)

J. Gowin | 8023 comments Papaphilly wrote: "In some respects, they do understand better."

The Commisar is unhappy with your use of the word some.

message 39: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5048 comments Scout wrote: "Why do you prefer Switzerland?"

Very stable government. If I have to hide with my money, I prefer not to have to worry about a country that may grab said money.
