Malaraa | 335 comments Felicia mentioned this author in the Rhapsody hangout, thought I'd share my experience of her books here. It'll be a little vague as I'm trying for total spoiler-free. :)

The first time through this series, I really enjoyed it. The bad guys are kinda been there, seen this villain before, but she obviously tried to keep them not all identical & one dimensional, there are really bad guys, kinda bad guys and just too stupid to realize they're bad guys. I liked Faraday and Azhure, I liked the world-building around the Icarii, but I didn't like all of the individual Icarii, which is a sign of good variety in them also.

Series-wide there were plenty of character arcs for the good guys, and the books kept on a roll pretty well. Between book 3 & 4 there are some POV shifts that maybe was a little abrupt. Then I reached the last one, book 6. There is a... "discovery" in book 6, where everything is coming together, which I really felt very disappointed in. It tied everything to... a something else (sorry, that's all I can really call it without severe spoilers) that gave a bad taste to all the previous story and left me with very mixed feelings about it all. It's been too long now for me to remember if the end of book 5 was a better stopping point or not. I'll skim through to refresh and report back on that. I almost gave away the books after that first time (very abnormal for me) because I was so bitter about it, I wasn't sure if I'd read them again.

So, overall, I recommend trying it (or trying again) but with the caveat that the last book is pretty unsatisfying.

Malaraa | 335 comments Ok, looked at the last chapter or so of each book again to refresh myself on what happened when.

I'd have to say I'd recommend reading the first 3, but not necessarily the last 3. Starman ends on a note where you know more things are going to happen with these people, but the particular story they've been living through is at a resting point, enough plot ends tied off neatly that it can work as an ending.

message 3: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne Thanks for the recommendation and review. I'm going to put the first three on my reading list - it sounds like I'd enjoy them! And it is pretty helpful to know that I might want to avoid those last three!

Jenifer (grumpypanda) | 2 comments I've read the first one and enjoyed it. The next two are on my TBR and I think I own them, so I'll get to them at some point. XD Thanks for the warning about the last three! I'll probably still read them as I'm a stickler for finishing out series once I start them, but it's nice to know what I'm getting myself into.

Susan | 1 comments I read these books years ago. All i can say is that the imagery is still with me 15 years later. Great books!

Diana (wisplights) | 2 comments Chiming in to say that the first three of these books are some of my absolute favorites - partially it's a nostalgia factor, as the first trilogy was one I found when I was a pre-teen and adoring any and all fantasy books - but I've also re-read the first three books every few years since then and I still very much love the world, characters and writing.

..But I do have to heartily agree that the second trilogy left a bad taste in my mouth. It's rare that I ignore an entire book in a series, let alone three of them, but I've persistently put those books on an 'out of sight, out of mind' shelf.

Michele | 128 comments I loved the first three, then something about the description of the next three didn't sit well with me so I never read them. I did read the first three several times back in the day though.
