I'd like to join but I've already got two classics I need to read in October. I might join later if you end up going past October.

Sounds good Ali! And you can always join in the discussion once you finish, even if it's later :)

message 11: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 166 comments Oliver Twist is a book I need to read for my PIE SLICE. I might check in later to see impressions.

Sounds good Lynnette! I am reading A Tale Of Two Cities for one of my pie slices. I want to find more Charles Dickens books, as his humor appeals to me greatly.

message 13: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 166 comments Jenny, I have always found Dickens to be a bit of a "slog". Be interested in your impressions of "Tale...." In return will give you my view of "Oliver".

Sounds good Sonia! I'll start tonight (at work) so I may get through the introduction haha

message 17: by Lynnette (new)

Lynnette | 166 comments I'm in. Have it on my Kindle. Will do my best. Dickens is always a challenge. I like the challenge of reading more than the usual. Not that my usual is bad, but it IS the usual.

Dickens can be a challenge, but a quite enjoyable one! I just got through the new introduction at work tonight. I did not realise how many characters he took from his own life!

message 19: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Thanks for the reminder, I'd totally forgotten!

Quite welcome Camille!
I've finished the first few chapters, and it is quite obvious where Dickens stands on the new poor laws!

At Chapter Seven. I like that we finally get to see some adults being nice to poor Oliver. And the scene between him and Noah in the celler- Hey he actually has a personality!

Sonia- I do like that quote as well! At chapter ten now, will refrain from posting for now, as everyine is at different parts!

message 23: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I finally got round to downloading the ebook and putting it on my e-reader. I've read the first two chapters and it brings me back to my uni years when I studied "Great Expectations". Dickens' writing is so funny.

Jenny, maybe you could post your comments but hide them as spoiler? Have you finished the book now?

Camille, I am about halfway through right now. I kinda got stuck haha. I'll have to do that once I get to a computer.

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Sonia wrote: "I've just finished it and it's great. I like Dickens' scathing sarcasm and anger at the workhouse system. And it got really exciting towards the end.

When I was about 8, I played an street urchin ..."

The school production sounds like fun!

I agree with Dickens' sarcasm. His writing is bordering on genius at times and I find myself laughing out loud at how clever and fun it can be.

Mr and Mrs Sowerberry reminded me a lot of Joe and his wife from "Great Expectations", they are the same type of characters.

Sonia, sounds like fun! I'm at page 320

message 27: by Camille (new)

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) I've at chapter 19. I'm so mad at what happened! Honestly, for a long time I didn't particularly fancy reading Dickens as the books are super long. But I'm totally emotionally invested in this - I admit I was wrong!!

Camille (camillesbookishadventures) Where's everyone at with Oliver Twist?
I'm stuck about 100 pages to the end and I have to say I'm a bit bored of it.

I finished it a few weeks ago. The end was pretty good, it's worth reading the rest of it Camille.
