Glenn Rolfe is another up-and-comer that is getting better and better with each release. He's another writer from Maine (yes, I think there is something in the water there) and I think his writing is more like Richard Laymon than it is Stephen King. Actually, with Glenn's latest tale, Chasing Ghosts Chasing Ghosts by Glenn Rolfe , I think he one-upped Laymon. Here's what I mean: Chasing Ghosts is similar in story to Laymon's The Woods are Dark The Woods are Dark by Richard Laymon . I've read both. I didn't like Laymon's at all, but really enjoyed Rolfe's. Why? Characters and plot. With Laymon's the characters were nitwits that continually put themselves in dumb situations (a pet peeve of mine). The plot also felt paper thin and I had an extremely hard time not rolling my eyes every few pages. With Chasing Ghosts, the characters felt more like everyday working stiffs that we all know. When danger presented itself, the characters recognized and acknowledged it instead of blindly stumbling forward when all signs point to getting the hell out of there. The sex. Yes, they both have it. Laymon's is laughable. Never, NEVER in a million years, I don't care how stupid or horny the twenty-somethings are, NO ONE is going to try to get a piece of ass after seeing their friends slashed to bits. Rolfe makes use of it in realistic situations.

So, if you enjoy Laymon, give Chasing Ghosts a try. The same kind of B-movie fun without all of the cliched stupidity.

Nick (veryevildead) | 26 comments I have only read Boom Town but it was a really good slimey bit of scifi/horror. Glenn is a really cool guy too. Got to meet him at Scares That Care and grab a few of his books.

Char I've read a couple of his older books and while they were not phenomenal reads, they were GOOD and I, too, see improvement with each new release.
I haven't yet read Chasing Ghosts, but I do believe Glenn has a LOT of potential and is worth keeping an eye on, for sure.
