When Kate's grandmother comes to live in DC and gives her a mysterious glowing medallion and tells her about time travelling, Kate is skeptical. Then her grandmother's murder during a previous timeline wipes Kate's parents out of existence and the only thing keeping Kate and her grandmother alive in this timeline is the medallion they wear and the house they are in being protected by medallion energy. Katherine, Kate's grandmother cannot leave the house, so Kate has to go back to the time before Katherine is murdered and warn her. This involves traveling to the Chicago World's Fair in 1893 where Katherine will be. However, first Kate has to learn about the time period and how to time travel. A successful mission will restore Kate's family and her life but it will eliminate her new boyfriend's memory of her. There are evil time travelers trying to manipulate events in history to gain power in the current time and the future. The future of life as it is currently is at stake. A very inventive story and great start to a series.
